Midnight Masquerade by Marcia Lynn McClure, Blog Tour, Book Review, & Giveaway!

Blurb:

Title: Midnight Masquerade
Stavos Voronin was not as blind-eyed as many nobles and royals. Evony’s physical gestures—even the simplest movement of her hands—revealed that she had not always been destitute. The same was true of the children—of their polished manners and the boy’s knowledge of horses and tendency to be bold and fearless of strangers.
Ah yes, Stavos enjoyed a good mystery. After all, interest in the inexplicable circumstances surrounding the royals of Abawyth was the very thing that had lured him to the kingdom—the enigma of Abawyth’s twelve sleepy princesses. And yet now—now his mind was all the more intrigued. Not only was the obscurity of what had caused the profound and baffling torpidity of Abawyth’s princesses laid out before him, but also he found his curiosity intensely piqued over the riddle surrounding the very lovely Evony and her siblings.
As Stavos strode through the village resting on the outskirts of Abawyth Castle, his mind reeled with possibilities. His musings were drawn back to why he had come to Abawyth at all—to solve the conundrum surrounding the twelve beautiful princesses of Abawyth kingdom—to solve the seemingly impenetrable crux and thereby win the hand of one of Abawyth’s princesses, as his father, King Letholdus of Ethiarien, had commanded.

My Review:
I immediately became caught up in another great book by Marcia Lynn McClure!  I have been a fan of hers for years and was anxious to read a new book by her!  Midnight Masquerade is her version of the twelve dancing princesses.  I really love Evony as the main character and Stavos is so handsome and such a gentleman that I could not help but love him!  The secrets that were kept and later revealed were fun and made the story interesting.  I have read a lot of versions of the twelve dancing princesses and this one was great!  It is different and Marcia put her own twist on it!  I love how original her version is and how the kissing *sigh* that Marcia is famous for, is a part of this book as well.  My only critique of the story was the over use of the words 'thus' and 'hence'.  It distracted me from the great story that was being told!  Other than that, this book is unique in its re-telling and a must read for any Marcia Lynn McClure fan!

Or for sixteen-year-old Jules Blaze. Or could it? For Jules, the heir of a Keeper, no less, suspects his family hides a forgotten secret. A Beastly Scandal by Shereen Vedam, Book Review

Blurb:

A BELLE OF THE BALL…
Lady Annabelle Marchant was a belle of the ball in London until she used her psychical senses to save a man’s life. She failed miserably, leaving him dead and her disgraced. All she wants now is a chance to comfort his widow by cleansing the woman’s home of her husband’s restless spirit. But the widow’s son, the beastly Lord of the Manor, accuses her of coming to the wilds of Cheshire to snag him as a husband. Thoroughly disgusted, she is bent on proving him wrong.

…BECOMES PERSONA NON-GRATA…
Lord Rufus Marlesbury, the Earl of Terrance, is suspected of murdering his father. He has come home to clear his name by finding the real killer before the new year or the king has promised that Rufus will be called in front of the House of Lords to answer for the crime. He does not have time to waste fending off a marriage-minded miss who has inveigled an invitation to his home by playing on his grief-stricken mother’s worst fears.

…WHEN A MURDERER IS ON THE RAMPAGE
With an unruly manor ghost terrorizing the occupants and corpses piling up in the village, Belle must find a way to see the man beneath the beast and Rufus must learn to believe in the love of a woman who has no reason to trust him. Only by working together can they stop a vengeful ghost before it torments the guests or before the killer strikes again.

(New Regency Romance/Fairytale)

My Review:

A Beastly Scandal is a historical/regency version of Beauty and the Beast, but there is an element of ghosts and mystery to it as well.  Lady Belle is a great character; headstrong, observant and loving.  she tends to notice things about people that others overlook.  I really liked that about her; it shows how much she cares for those around her.  Lord Terrance is stubborn and frightening in ways!  The villagers refer to him as Lord Terror!  Yet Lady Belle sees a different side to him than most people.  The supporting characters round out the story well and make the novel complete.  A Beastly Scandal is well written and although it is a version of Beauty and the Beast, it has its own unique qualities that make it intriguing to the reader.  I did feel that the romance and relationship between Lady Belle and Lord Terrance had no basis other than seeing each other and falling in love by sight.  However, that can be typical of some romance novels.  Also, the cover does not do the novel justice, so please don't judge this book by the cover!   It is a nice read for those who enjoy a good mystery/regency/fairy tale novel!

Ruin by Rachel Van Dyken, Book Review

Blurb:

I'm not your typical girl. I've been running away from the memories that haunt me for so long that depression has become my only comfort. I was content in the darkness...until Wes Michals offered to be my light.

I didn't know that time wasn't my ally -- that every second that ticked past was one step closer to the end of something that was beginning to mean the end of myself. He tried to warn me. He promised me all he was able to offer--each moment as it came--but it would never be enough.

Sometimes when you think it's the end, it's only the beginning. Wes thought he could save me, but in giving me everything, he ruined me. Because after one kiss, one touch, I couldn't--I wouldn't ever be the same.

And from that moment on, his heartbeat became my own.

My Review:

Ruin wasn't what I expected, it was better! It is a story that I didn't foresee, a topic I didn't think could be tackled, and a journey I didn't want to end. Ruin is raw; pure raw emotion. You will cry, your breathing will hitch, you will tell yourself 'this can't be happening' over and over again -- and you will continue to read because this story is powerful and has the ability to change you -- change your outlook on life, on love, on time. I feel blessed to have read this book (yes I just said 'blessed' in a book review). Ultimately Wes and Kiersten's story will become a movie in your mind as you experience it first-hand. Gabe and Lisa will become your friends too because this story feels real. Wes, Kiersten, Gabe and Lisa show what true friendship and love it all about. Because you never know what hand life will deal you, only you can decide what to do with the hand you are dealt. Ruin is heart-wrenching, packs an emotional punch (or two) and takes you on a journey you never thought you would take. Words honestly cannot describe how incredible this novel is. Ruin spans multiple genres because this inspiring novel will bring even the harshest critic to tears.
"Do it afraid." ~Wes
"...we'll keep our own time." ~Kiersten

Emma: A Latter-day Tale by Rebecca Jamison, LDS Blog Tour & Book Review

Cover Blurb:

NOT Looking for Love: Single woman (23) seeks best friend to chat on the phone, shop the clearance racks, watch chick flicks, try out messy cooking projects, and eat Dove dark chocolates.

Emma isn’t so good at the whole life-coaching thing. Her first client ended up with a broken heart and is threatening to relapse in her bad habits. Now Emma has problems of her own to deal with, and all those problems start with one name: Justin.

Justin is her best friend, so it’s hard for Emma not to feel betrayed when she suspects he is falling for her childhood rival. And she knows she’s losing him despite her best efforts. No matter how much she tries, she keeps running up against obstacles. How is she supposed to help other people when she’s drowning in her own failures?

Fans of Jane Austen’s Emma will love this modern retelling of the classic romance novel. Fall in love with Emma’s latter-day tale of redemption, forgiveness, and the quest for true love.

My Review:

Emma:  A Latter-day Tale is an LDS re-telling of Emma by Jane Austen.  Emma is your typical Emma, she is constantly trying to be a matchmaker with her friends and neglects her own feelings.  She is frustrating at times and at others so sweet.  Her flaws are what make her someone you can relate to and someone who is realistic.  Justin is her best friend and a true constant in her life, yet she finds herself doubting even her trust in him.  Will she help others find true love or will she make the ultimate match...her own?

I really enjoyed this novel and the LDS aspect of it is so small that I don't think someone who is not LDS would be bothered by it.  It is in no way preachy, it just talks a little bit about prayer and forgiveness.  The overall flow of the book is nice and it is an enjoyable read.  Emma's character is what makes the book so great and entertaining!  The supporting characters are all diverse and they rounded the story out beautifully.  If you enjoy Austen re-tellings then Emma:  A Latter-day Tale is a book you will enjoy!

Excerpt:

It was amazing how much more snow Phil could pick up with his shovel than I could with mine. He cleared three feet of the driveway before I was done with one.
“When we’re done, if you have time, you should come in and meet Harri. I think you two will get along.”
Phil stopped and looked at his watch. “I’m planning to do a couple more driveways before it gets dark.”
“I’ll go get Harri now if you’re in a hurry. She wants to meet you.”
Phil leaned on his shovel. “Harry is a she?”
“Her real name is Harriet. She moved here a couple months ago and she’s hardly met anybody. I think you’ll like her.”
Phil threw his head back, laughed, and started shoveling again. “I thought you were trying to introduce me to your new boyfriend.”
“You think I would be out here shoveling snow while my new boyfriend stays inside?” I grabbed a handful of snow and threw it at him. I didn’t mean to hit him in the face, but that’s where it landed.
Phil wiped the snow off his face and grinned. “I wondered why you were dating such a loser.” I expected him to throw a snowball at me, but he just stood there. “So you don’t have a boyfriend?”
I giggled a little at his awkwardness. “Nope. Harri doesn’t either.”
Phil threw another shovelful of snow away from the driveway. “So you . . . I mean, you and your friend are . . . available?” Phil didn’t open his mouth enough when he talked. That was the one thing about him that always distracted me. I couldn’t help staring at his mouth.
I had to force myself to look into his eyes. “Why is that a shock, Phil? Every woman in that house right now is available. You can take your pick—Harri, me, or Barbara. You’re surrounded by single women.” It was safe to assume Phil wouldn’t pick me. I was at least three inches taller than he was, and it was a rare man who dated a taller woman.

As the violence escalates throughout the town, Katie must choose between the two men who have been vying for her love though only one might be able to restore hope to her heart.

My Review:

I have to say that I am a HUGE fan of Sarah M. Eden!  I own all of her books and when I was offered the chance to read and review Longing for Home, I was ecstatic!  Longing for Home is a very different style of book then Ms. Eden's previous books.  It delves deeper into the personal feelings and life of the main character Katie Macauley.  I empathized with her past and everything she endured when she lived in Ireland.  I wanted to cry for the pain she was holding inside.  I cheered for her fire and desire to not let anyone determine her future for her.  This story is no ordinary one; it weaves together a past of pain, a present of hard work and the unknown and a future of decisions yet to be made.  If you want a book with a real story, with historical roots and about one courageous woman, then this is the book for you.  You will be blown away by the depth of emotion and the battle Katie faces within herself.  Longing for Home is a novel that you do not want to miss!  I highly recommend this book, five stars!  Looking forward to the sequel, because I say that there must be one!

Story's End by Marissa Burt Book Review

STORY’S END (HarperCollins, 4/2/2013)
Ages: 8-12   Trade ISBN: 9780062020543

Inkheart meets The Neverending Story in the sweeping sequel to Storybound. A deadly Enemy has returned to the magical land of Story—and twelve-year-old Una Fairchild may hold the key to defeating him.

Long ago, a King ruled the land of Story....During his reign, Heroes, Villains, and characters of all kinds lived out Tales filled with daring quests and epic struggles. Then the King disappeared, and over the years nearly everyone forgot that he had ever existed.

Now an evil Enemy has emerged, determined to write a new future for Story. And an ordinary girl from our world named Una Fairchild must find a way to defeat him.

Una and her friends Indy and Peter set off on a quest for answers, facing warlocks, beasts, and enchantments at every turn. But Una soon discovers that the real key lies in her own mysterious ties to Story’s past—and to the long-forgotten King who may be their only hope for survival.

Storybound has been praised by Kirkus Reviews for its “richly imagined world” and by Publishers Weekly as “an appealing fantasy with strong writing and interesting characters.” Story’s End is filled with the same breathtaking action, heartwarming friendship, and timeless appeal. Readers will leap at the chance to return to this captivating fairy-tale world, which is perfect for fans of Inkheart, Gail Carson Levine, and classics like A Wrinkle in Time.

My Review:

I am one of those people who have been waiting an entire year for this book to come out!  In fact, I read Storybound when it was free on Harper Collins website last April and I read the whole book on my computer!  I was hooked and loved it so much that I purchased a hardback book for myself!  So when Story's End came out, it was long over-due for this huge fan of Marissa Burt!  The world of story is everything and more that you can imagine about fairy tales and books!
If you loved Storybound, then you will love Story's End!  This series is amazing and the adventures continue with Una, Peter and Indy.  The land of Story is a unique place where all kids will want to imagine themselves!  The action and suspense are all there and the question remains whether or not Story can be saved or if The End will come!  Scenarios I never imagined occurred and the ending will not be at all what you expected!  Characters have to decide once and for all whose side they are on and whether or not they will be a hero!  A fabulous conclusion to the story, this series is truly what any middle grader on up will love to read!

Rating:  Middle grade/action/fantasy

The Deception of Devin Miller by Kelly Martin, Book Review

Blurb:

One month ago, seventeen year old Devin Miller wrecked while intoxicated— or so she’s told by the sightly ticked off blue-eyed boy when she wakes up from a coma. The only thing Devin remembers is the darkness holding her down and the voices-- some happy, some upset, and one very agitated. She can't remember her name, her age, where she lives, or who in the world the blue-eyed boy is. But he knows her and against her better judgment, she offers to pay him for his memories so she can trick the ones closest to her into thinking she's fine.

That is her first mistake.

When Devin gets home, the deception is harder than she thought. People she doesn't know keep talking to her. Trey (the blue-eyed boy) doesn't show up like he said he would. And the police want to talk to her about her involvement with the car accident. Plus she keeps seeing flashes of the wreck, but none of them make sense. What would a red plastic cup have to do with anything? And why can't she seem to trust the people she is supposed to trust the most?

Facing DUI charges for a wreck she can't recall, Devin fights to remember exactly what happened the night of the crash: something the real driver desperately wants her to forget permanently.

Who is really doing the deceiving?

My  Review:

BEWARE:  Once you start this book you will not be able to stop!!!  Seriously!!!  This book is amazing and I was hooked right from the start.  A seventeen year old girl wakes up in the hospital and she has no clue who she is!  And super hot volunteer guy is right there when she wakes up, looking at her kinda broodingly.  Who is he?  For goodness sake she doesn't even know who she is!  From there you are taken on a whirlwind ride while Devin tries to put together the pieces of who she was and decide who she wants to be.  Add into that the whole mystery behind the car accident, the strange way her boyfriend, best friend and father are acting, and yeah, can we say DRAMA?   A fantastic read that will have you flying through the pages, The Deception of Devin Miller is one awesome book!  Romance, mystery, intrigue, hot guy, rich girl who can't remember who she is....I could go on and on....but I won't!  Read it for yourself!!!

Blurb;  This station is responsible for protecting Mirian’s market district. You’ll be dealing with theft, murder, violent gangs, angry shopkeepers, fires, drunks, lost cats and everything in between...you’ll see the best and worst of people. You’ll see enough blood to rival the city’s busiest fish mongers and surgeons, and there will be times you’ll want to crawl into a hole or a bottle and not come out. But if you can keep a keen eye on the man beside you and remember that in this district, you follow my orders, not the Commander's, the Count’s or the God's if you can handle all of that then I’m happy to have you...If not I’m sure the Talon are looking for men...” – Watch Captain Nathan Tam

Follow the overworked and underfunded City Watch as they endeavour to keep the port city of Mirian and themselves alive whilst competing against a vicious mercenary group to enforce a brutal crackdown on crime which forces a group of thieves to take whatever jobs they can to survive. However unbeknownst to all, a new threat moves through the city’s catacombs intent on transforming Mirian into a fetid grave for its inhabitants.
