Larken by S.G. Rogers, Book Review

Blurb:

The sole survivor of a train accident, young Larken Burke is dubbed the Miracle Orphan. Four years later, however, her life is far from fortunate. Because of her emotional and physical scars, she believes she’s un-marriageable. With little hope for the future, she agrees to wed a gentleman she’s never met. Unfortunately, his aloof manner proves difficult to take.

Marked by romantic tragedy and the loss of his brother, Brandon King has forsworn marriage. Obliged to take in a ward, he advertises for a mail-order bride to raise the boy. Since the union is to be a marriage in name only, his criteria are youthful age, a certain level of intellect, good breeding, and that the girl shouldn’t be so ill-favored she would embarrass him in society. To his dismay, he gets more than he’d bargained for.

Will it take a miracle for Mr. and Mrs. King to fall in love, or is their marriage another accident waiting to happen?

My Review:

Larken is the kind of book I love to read! It has a beautiful cover and the story pulled me in and kept me there the entire time! From one page to the next I thought I knew where the story was going, but Rogers threw me several curve balls I didn't see coming! I was rooting for Larken the entire time and felt I came to know her. Myles was such a breath of fresh air, I loved every scene he was a part of! He was an endearing little boy! If you think you have this book figured out, just stop there! This is not your typical historical romance, it is so much better!!! I am still reeling from the final curve ball of the book! If you are on the fence about buying this book, do yourself a favor and click the purchase button, you won't be sorry!!!

#1 New York Times Best Selling Author Rachel Van Dyken joins forces with Regencies hottest names to bring you a Regency Holiday Box Set of "Forbidden Love"

A Winter Wish-By Nadine Millard
Mariah Bolton is as headstrong as she is clever, as strong-willed as she is beautiful. She enjoys her life and, apart from a rather snobbish mama, she is happy with her lot.
Imagine her consternation then when her world is turned upside down by the brooding and aloof Mr. Brandon Haverton!
Mariah and Brandon are forced to endure each other’s company more than either wants to when a snowstorm traps them in the same house.
They argue, they bang heads and they drive each other insane.
But something precious is blooming beneath the surface of all that ice. Something neither looks for but both need.
Can love melt the snow around Brandon’s cold heart?
Can Mariah be brave enough to take a leap of faith?
And can a Winter Wish help bring two souls together forever?

For the Love of a Lady-By Kristin Vayden
Lady Esther Flanguard is all of the above… but that’s all about to change soon.
Because, Essie has a plan. And it’s sure to work brilliantly.
The only thing standing in her way is trying to convince Cross—her best friend’s brother—to go along with it.

Lord Crossby, Cross to those who know him well, knows that Essie’s plan is not a good idea.
What Essie doesn’t know, is that he’s been in love with her for years. He refuses to leave this second chance left to fate. He lost her once, and plans to never lose her again.

So, knowing he’ll risk his heart, he agrees to play along with her disastrous plan. Silently vowing, that though Essie might be pretending…he isn’t, and this time he’s playing for keeps.

Cloaked in Red:A Shattered Fairy Tale-By Kelly Martin
Frederick Dodsworth has no desire to find love at Anthony Wexley's Christmas gathering. Yet when he lays his eyes the beautiful Rebecca for the first time, he is beyond smitten.
Lust turns to love. Love turns to jealousy. Jealousy turns to betrayal.
How did Frederick Dodsworth become the most evil man in Darenset? Simple. It started with a kiss.

The Devil Duke Takes a Bride-By Rachel Van Dyken
Who said being bad wasn't oh so good?
Benedict Devlyn, Duke of Banbury, has one thing on his mind and it isn't marriage. But things take a turn for the worse when his menacing aunt throws a hitch in his plans to remain the most sinful and talked about man in the ton. After all, a man cannot keep the reputation of being The Devil Duke when he is leg-shackled to some simpering spinster.
But his aunt, bless her heart, thinks she's dying, and believes her nephew's behavior is the only thing standing in the way between her entrance to heaven or hell. So she very lovingly and selflessly sets him up. With his childhood nemesis.
A young woman who, though she claims it was an accident, has nearly killed him thrice through her lack of grace and manners. It matters not that the minute he sets eyes on her at the Christmas ball, his blood boils with lust. He refuses to allow himself to fall prey to his aunt's ministrations.
That is, until he is compromised and stuck in an engagement to a girl who claims she'd rather jump from a moving carriage than marry him. Funny thing that, for the very minute she says no, he finds his heart very much wants to say yes. When she doesn't leap at the chance to marry him, he sets about to not only prove that he's worthy of her favor, but also worthy of her heart.

A Courtship for Cecilia (The Love Bird Series #3) by Ruth J. Hartman, Book Review

Blurb:

Cecilia Fletcher yearns for true love with the man of her heart. A life of her own, away from her demanding mother would be an added benefit. But in order to do that, Cecilia must live a lie, making it necessary to use a false name in order to hide a family secret.

Barrington Radcliff has been betrayed by a woman who he thought loved him. Because of that, trust is hard to willingly give. When he meets pretty Cecilia Fleming, his heart wants to give her a chance. Something about her doesn’t ring true, but Barrington allows love to overrule his good judgment.

Can Cecilia and Barrington get past their hurt and secrets long enough to find true love?

My Review:

By far this is my favorite book in the series! Lord Lofton shows how much he has changed and for the better and we get a chance to really know Cecilia and her sweet personality. I loved the mix of old and new characters! Uncle Percy was my favorite and I would love to see him in a future book. He is wise, eccentric and honest; what a great character! Once again Hartman has written a fun and charming book that would appeal to the majority of readers!  If you want romance, fun, and a little bit of crazy all set in England, this is the book to read!

Rough Around the Edges Meets Refined (Meet Your Match #2) by Rachael Anderson, Blog Tour & Giveaway!!!

Rough Around the Edges

Rough Around the Edges
Rough Around the Edges Meets Refined (Meet Your Match #2) by Rachael Anderson For Noah Mackie, life is finally back on track. He has a great support system, a promised promotion is on its way, and he's finally getting the hang of this single father thing. But when the job falls through and his neighbor's matchmaking efforts become more aggressive, Noah is in for yet another unwanted detour. With his career and two spirited daughters to worry about, he doesn't have time for dating—especially not someone like Cassie Ellis, his girls' beautiful and sophisticated dance instructor, who is about as open and approachable as a brick wall. Rough around the Edges Meets Refined is about two people who think they know exactly what they want but who have no idea what they really need. It's about learning that people aren't always what they seem and that sometimes life’s detours take you exactly where you need to go.

My Review:

I really loved the first book in this series and the second was just as good! In book two we get to learn and understand all about Noah, Emma's brother and father of her two adorable nieces!  Anderson does a spot on job of intertwining the two siblings' worlds and moving from Emma's story to Noah's. While Cassie was a wild card, an unknown to me as the reader, getting to know her and understand the depth of her emotions was a wonderful journey.  I loved this story for so many reasons! Because it is about second chances, learning to trust again, trying to figure out who you are and that trying to do all of those things isn't easy. In fact, it is much easier said than done.  The story is so close to how I imagine it would be if these characters actually existed!!!  Anderson is an amazing storyteller who captivates my attention and holds until the very last word!

12th century England: Two men vie for the throne: King Stephen the usurper and young Duke Henry the rightful heir. Amid civil and private wars, alliances are formed, loyalties are betrayed, families are divided, and marriages are made.
For four years, Lady Annyn Bretanne has trained at arms with one end in mind—to avenge her brother’s murder as God has not deemed it worthy to do. Disguised as a squire, she sets off to exact revenge on a man known only by his surname, Wulfrith. But when she holds his fate in her hands, her will wavers and her heart whispers that her enemy may not be an enemy after all.

Baron Wulfrith, renowned trainer of knights, allows no women within his walls for the distraction they breed. What he never expects is that the impetuous young man sent to train under him is a woman who seeks his death—nor that her unveiling will test his faith and distract the warrior from his purpose.

Spotlight: Prudence Pursued by Shirley Raye Redmond

Prudence Pursued

By Shirley Raye Redmond
Astraea Press, July 2014
Available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords, and Kobo
$4.99

Despite Prudence Pentyre’s best efforts, her cousin Margaret proves
reluctant to accept Sir James Brownell’s marriage proposal, and fears
being “bovinised” if she undergoes the controversial cowpox vaccination he
recommends. And the dashing baronet seems more concerned about the plight
of headhunters in Borneo than Margaret’s refusal. Then Prudence suddenly
finds herself smitten with the man. What can she do?

Here are a few startling facts that will help readers of PRUDENCE PURSUED
and other Regency romance novels appreciate Edward Jenner’s contributions
to the era so popular with fiction readers:

(1)    In its day, smallpox was referred to as “the speckled monster. (2)    It
killed hundreds of millions of people—more than the Black Death and the
wars of the 20th century put together!
(3)    President Thomas Jefferson, who used the Jennerian method to vaccinate
his own family, friends, and slaves, once wrote to Jenner: “Yours is the
comfortable reflection that mankind can never forget that you have lived.”
(4)    A woman who was considered a “great beauty” during this time period
was usually one who had not been seriously disfigured by smallpox. It was
understood by portrait artists of the day that they were not to paint in
the disfigurements and pockmarks of their subjects.
(5)    Jane Austen’s dearest friend Martha Lloyd was scarred by smallpox for
the remainder of her life. Several members of the Lloyd household died
from the disease. A character in Austen’s novel Northanger Abbey is
disfigured and crippled by the dreaded disease.

And what do pretty milkmaids have to do with Jenner’s discovery of the
possible prevention of smallpox? Read PRUDENCE PURSUED and find out! And
enjoy a lively love story along the way.

A Timeless Romance Anthology: Silver Bells Collection

Blurb:

Six Award-Winning Authors have contributed new stories to A Timeless Romance Anthology: Silver Bells. Readers will love this collection of six historical novellas, all centered around the Christmas season with one thing in common: Romance.

In NY Times & USA Today’s bestselling author Lucinda Brant’s delightful novella, FAIRY CHRISTMAS, Kitty Aldershot is orphaned and forced to live on others’ charity. Offered a home under the generous roof of her relatives, the Earl of Salt Hendon and his countess, Kitty wants for nothing, not even the affections of Mr. Tom Allenby. But when Kitty stumbles across a letter written by Lady Caroline that reveals how Mr. Allenby would be ruined should he marry the likes of Kitty, she realizes she has been fooling herself all along. Kitty’s world crumbles around her as she recognizes she will forever be alone with no prospects at all.

Sarah M. Eden’s charming romance novella A CHRISTMAS PROMISE, Sean Kirkpatrick is trying to get to his new place of employment, Kilkenny Castle, in order to start as the new stablehand. His only requirement is to drive a team of high-spirited nags from Dublin to Kilkenny in a certain amount of time. Unfortunately he winds up in a muddy field, stuck, lost, and running out of time. He’s about to lose the job before he can prove himself capable of finishing his first assignment. When Maeve Butler arrives on the scene, Sean isn’t sure if she’s intent on rescuing him or bent on torturing him with her fiery wit and lovely dark eyes.

In Heather B. Moore’s enchanting novella, TWELVE MONTHS, Lucien Baxter’s best and most incorrigible friend, Will, dies unexpectedly, leaving behind his new bride and unborn child the week before Christmas. Will’s last request is that Lucien watches over Cora, not just as a benefactor, but as a husband. When Lucien does his duty and proposes to Cora, he’s turned down flat. But over the course of the next few days, Lucien discovers that marrying Cora wouldn’t be any sort of duty after all, but a matter of following his heart.

In Lu Ann Staheli’s sweet romance novella, A FEZZIWIG CHRISTMAS, Dick Wilkins and his best friend Ebenezer Scrooge have been looking forward to the annual Fezziwig Christmas dance for weeks. Ebenezer is practically engaged to Annabelle Fezziwig, and Dick hopes to start courting her younger sister, Pricilla. Once the dance starts, and Pricilla arrives, as pretty and charming as ever, Dick discovers that he’s not the only man vying for her attention. His best friend advises Dick that he has to win Pricilla’s heart, as well as her mother’s favor. Losing his heart has suddenly become very complicated.

A TASTE OF HOME, a captivating romance by Annette Lyon, we meet Claire Jennings, who’s on her way to spend Christmas with her family. As she rides the train with William Rhodes, who grew up across the street, memories of Christmases past flood her mind. He may be twenty-one now, but she can’t forget his torturous teasing from their school years. At the rail station, Claire discovers that her home is under quarantine because her little brother has measles. She's stuck in town, away from her family, on her favorite holiday. William stays behind with her, and as Christmas Day approaches and her homesickness deepens, she discovers that perhaps he has changed in more ways than one.

Becca Wilhite’s entrancing novella, MY MODERN GIRL, follows Margie, who lands her dream job as a clerk at Macy’s department store in New York City. Margie might be new in town, but she’s determined to succeed and prove to Henry that moving to the city was the right decision. As the Christmas season approaches, Margie realizes that being a “modern girl” might not be all she had dreamed of and Henry might have more to offer than she ever imagined.

My Review:

I am always a fan of these great anthologies! Silver Bells includes six great short stories all about Christmas. When you don't have much time to read, one of these stories is just the right fit! I felt the cold, saw the lights and was wishing for snow in my own little town! Reading Silver Bells is a great way to get into the Christmas Spirit!
