Ember (Eagle Elite Volume 5) by Rachel Van Dyken, Book Review

Book Summary:

I am a Killer. A Rapist. A Monster.
I know only pain and survival.
That is until the Cappo's sister walked into my life.
And changed everything.

She's a light who makes my darkness darker, her smile makes my heart turn to ice, and I can't escape the fear her seductive looks instill--knowing it's only a matter of time before I fail--again, and take her for myself.
This is the story of my redemption.
But it's not pretty...I died, and now I'm alive, but not living, breathing but not surviving. I am Phoenix De Lange, son to a murdered mob boss, estranged brother, horrible friend, monster in the making, newest leader to one of the most powerful families in the Cosa Nostra.
And I will have my vengeance.
Or die trying.
I am Phoenix De Lange.
Death is all I know.
Until she offers me a piece of life--I can't resist taking.

My Review:

I don't know how Van Dyken is able to write story after amazing story! I wasn't sure how I would feel about Phoenix after all the stuff that went down in prior books, but his story drew me in and I could feel his pain, shame and anguish (This is not an easy subject to read about). I wanted him to rise from the ashes as his name symbolizes and to find happiness! I am not sure that is possible when you are in the mafia and a mob boss! No spoilers here, just know that Van Dyken works her writing magic again in Ember. I was drawn in and hooked until the last page and by then it was past midnight! Par for the course with a Van Dyken book! This series is amazing and will turn you into a fan of the mafia genre!

Rating:
Heat level: spicy with a few open door scenes/sexual innuendos
A lot of profanity because this is the mafia

Love is a Choice by Lynn G. Robbins, LDS Blog Tour

Book Summary:

We all know that actions speak louder than words. We may say “I love you,” but do our actions back up that claim? Elder Lynn G. Robbins teaches us that love is more than a feeling — it is a commitment, a promise to be responsible, respectful, and responsive to the needs and experiences of other. And like any other action we undertake, perfecting the act of love requires a lifetime of practice and good choices.
As Elder Robbins teaches, the daily choices we make in our marriages and families are what shape lasting love. He helps us to recognize the role that our agency plays in developing forgiveness, patience, kindness, responsibility, and other virtuous traits. We come to see that as we actively try to do things differently, Christ helps us to be the people He wants us to be — people like Him.
Whether you're engaged to be married, a newlywed, or someone with decades of marriage under your belt, this counsel from an inspired leader will help you develop more Christlike love for those around you. As you draw closer to the Savior through your daily choices and actions, His love will fill your home.

My Review:
I think this is a really great book to read before you get married, but is also a great book for anyone in a relationship to read. Who knew love could be so complicated? But ultimately love is not only a choice, but it is a verb, an action word. When we choose to act with kindness, charity and true love, our relationship with our spouse will grow stronger and we will become closer. I really like the format of the book, there are nice charts and sections are labeled for easy reference, especially if you are looking for a specific part. Anyone who loves somebody can benefit from reading Love is a Choice!

Date and Dash (Better Date than Never #10) by Susan Hatler, Book Review

Book Summary:

Mary Ann Nielsen lives by her one-strike-and-you’re-out dating policy, but she’s always open to meeting the right guy. When she accidentally rear-ends handsome Trevor Brooks on her way to a charity auction to buy back her beloved grandmother’s long lost bracelet, she figures this unconventional meeting could at least turn into a hot date. Wrong. Trevor is annoyingly responsible and more concerned with insurance reports than responding to her flirting so he earns three strikes right off the bat.

Flustered from the car accident and being rejected by gorgeous Trevor, Mary Ann mistakenly bids on the wrong auction item and loses out on reclaiming her grandmother’s bracelet. Instead, she wins four dates on a reality TV show with none other than stuffy Trevor Brooks. Now she’s broke and the only way to get the money to buy back her special family heirloom is to win the grand prize money from the televised couples competition by convincing the audience that she and Trevor are in love.

While dating Trevor on the show, Mary Ann discovers the reliable analyst is fun and kind-hearted. In fact, the more she finds out about him the more she starts to fall for him. Could giving Trevor a second chance mean winning not just the TV show and her grandmother’s bracelet but the love that Mary Ann has always dreamed of?

My Review:

Hatler has done it again! She drew me in from page one and I couldn't read Mary Ann's story fast enough! Then when I had finished reading, I had withdrawals! Sweet, sassy, fun and flirty, Hatler knows how to write a romance that every woman wants to read! I am amazed at how a shorter story (105 pages is short to me) could be so packed full of deep emotions. Most writers are lucky to achieve that in a full length novel and Hatler has done it in novella! I will read anything Hatler writes, she gets women today. She writes about laughter, tears, love and friendship. I cannot wait for more!

The Blueprint of Christ's Church by Tad R. Callister, Blog Tour

Book Summary:

A strong testimony requires a solid foundation. This is especially true in our day, when we have so much access to information from so many sources, both reliable and spurious. With the numerous voices competing for our attention, how can we avoid being "carried about with every wind of doctrine" (Eph. 4:14)?
In The Blueprint's of Christ's Church, Tad R. Callister provides a thoughtful, systematic explanation of foundational gospel principles, tying them to Jesus Christ and demonstrating how the "blueprint" of the original Church of Jesus Christ matches the structure of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Seasoned Church members and new converts alike will benefit from this "refresher course." The carefully reasoned, scripture-based summaries of a variety of basic principles offer a great resource for parents, missionaries, and Church leaders and teachers.

My Review:
The premise of this book is to put to the test that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the same church that Jesus Christ established when He lived on the earth. The author takes each aspect of Christ's church and through scripture explains how it is the same in the LDS church today. This is an extensive read (almost 400 pages) and is not one to be skimmed over or rushed through. However it is organized nicely into sections with questions and then answers/explanations. It would also make a great reference book as well for someone looking for answers to specific questions. Anyone whether a new or long-time member can enjoy this book.

Men of Covenant by Robert L. Millet, Blog Tour

Book Summary:

We are a covenant-making people, but do we fully appreciate the power of the promises contained in just the twelve short verses of the oath and covenant of the priesthood?
In Men of Covenant, companion to Men of Valor and Men of Influence, author Robert L. Millet invites us to explore such questions as these:
What are the terms and conditions of the oath and covenant of the priesthood?
What would my life be like if I were more focused on my covenants?
How could my more covenant-focused life affect my family and others for whom I have responsibility?
As we consider the promises Melchizedek Priesthood holders make to God and His irrevocable promise to faithful priesthood holders, we discover the glorious blessings He makes available to us all, both men and women.

My Review:
Robert L. Millet has become a favorite LDS writer of mine. I love that he uses scripture and quotes from the prophets to explain the principles he is discussing. In every book I have read by him, especially this one, he makes it easier to understand gospel principles by breaking them down and referencing scripture. While Men of Covenant is more geared toward men, I felt like I was able to glean a lot of information from the book. I truly loved the beginning of the book when he explained all about covenants. At the end of each chapter he poses "Points to Ponder" so the reader can think back about what they have read and be able to internalize the information. This is a great book that you will learn from and leave you with a lot to ponder.

With No Regrets by Julie N. Ford, Blog Tour

With No Regrets

With No Regrets Cover

With No Regrets by Julie N. Ford

Living With No Regrets Is Harder Than It Seems Finley isn’t exactly sure when her life began to feel unfamiliar. She suspects the transformation started long before she caught her husband and fellow garden club member doing the white-trash-two-step on her new Bernhardt sofa. Now free from the shackles of a loveless marriage, and with her children off to college, she’s finally able to go searching for the missing pieces of her heart. Finley’s best friend, Cathyanne, is already working hard to ensure that Finley finds true love this time around. But when Finley is unwittingly tossed into the arms of two men—their sexy trainer and her neighbor, a popular country star—Cathyanne fears finding the right guy will be more complicated than she ever could have imagined. For Finley, building a new life feels as impossible as flying a paper airplane to the moon. But maybe, just maybe, with the right help, she will find her whole heart—even if it’s in the very last place she thinks to look.

Praise for With No Regrets

“The imagery is beautiful, the romance very well done and realistic.” Rachel Ann Nunes. Finley is a spunky and snarky Southern woman with a lot of sass! The romance is swoon-worthy and satisfying. And underneath it all, it's got a great message. Definitely worth a read!

Excerpt:

“All right, I think we’ve given Finley enough food for thought on her first day.” Careen waved her arms in a settle-down motion. “As I explained earlier, each week we focus on one step, and then at the following meeting report on the progress we’ve made toward completing that step,” she explained. “So for the benefit of our newest member, how ’bout we recite the ‘Five Steps to a New Beginning’ before moving on.” She pointed to a rolling chalkboard. “All together now.”
“Number one: Subjugate fear,” she started, and the rest of the group joined in. “Take chances. Learn from and consent to the unexpected.”
“Number two: Defy the rules, embrace the guidelines. Rules emphasize the result. Guidelines focus on the journey.
“Number three: Smash the box. Look outside your comfort zone for the best answers and the greatest opportunity for growth.
“Number four: Brimful heart. If one’s heart is hollow, one’s actions are hollow.
“Number five: Letitgo. Leave the past, live the future.”
Following along with the words scrawled onto the powder-smeared chalkboard, Finley felt a cool sweat breaking out on her forehead. Only five goals, but each one felt like one gaping pit of quicksand after another.
Take chances and defy rules? Smash the box? Letitgo? What did any of that even mean? Brimful heart. Finley pressed the heel of her palm to the center of her chest and felt nothing, nothing but an empty hole where her heart should be. Just because she hadn’t been particularly sad to see Roy pack his things and go, didn’t mean his absence hadn’t left a gap in her life. His leaving had been like pulling a random peg from a Jenga tower, only to find that it was the last piece still holding the structure together.
Careen said, “I know these goals can seem overwhelming at first, but taking the first step is the hardest part.”
“Amen to that,” Burlie-Jean agreed.
“Though some of us are further along than others, we’re all on the same path,” Careen went on. “Everyone progresses at his or her own pace. One step at a time, one week at a time until we find our new normal,” she said, then zeroed in on Finley. “So start with number one, only number one . . .”
Finley watched Careen’s lips spill words of hope and encouragement. If only she could bathe in the completeness each syllable offered until the possibility adhered to her skin, remolding her, body and soul, into the kind of woman who knew what it meant to be happy, one who refused to settle for anything less—
“Finley?” Careen said, causing Finley to start. “This coming week, your first task is to identify a fear and then make an attempt to overcome that fear. Do you think you can do that?”
Having already put too much of herself on display for these strangers’ entertainment, what Finley really wanted to do was leave and never set foot inside this circle again. “I’ll surely give it a try,” she promised, though, obviously, she had no intention of doing any such thing.
“Good.” Careen appeared cautiously optimistic. “Okay, who wants to share next?”

My Review:

I love this collection of short stories and I was surprised at how many are jam-packed into one book! This anthology has it all and each story is different yet is tied together through the common thread of mistaken or hidden identity! Some stories are suspenseful and full of heart-pounding moments; others are sweet, some are more sassy, and one had me thinking, "Really?"! I was honestly amazed that I truly enjoyed each and every novellette. I really thought that at least one of them I wouldn't care for, but I truly enjoyed every single one! You get a whole lot of bang for your buck in this anthology! My favorite part of reading this has been the new authors I have found that I cannot wait to read more of their work! My only complaint is that the stories ended! Seriously folks, could you consider turning these into full-length novels? They were that good!

Book Summary:

Cassie Angel is used to taking care of herself. With a spirit of adventure, and a need to stay safe, she departs a dying Nevada town for the golden opportunities that await in California--along with a new life. When charming Sam Ridgeway shows up, claiming to know her uncle, and offers her protection in her travels, she has no idea there is an ulterior motive involved.

My Review (because I love this book!):

Sourdough Creek by Caroline Fyffe is my kind of book! I love and truly enjoy a well-written sweet (clean) romance novel! From the beginning, the book just grabbed my attention and had me intrigued! I wanted, no I NEEDED to know why these two girls were dressing up as boys! Every time I thought I had this story figured out, it would take a different twist or turn! The characters were wonderful, and I enjoyed getting to know them and their strengths and weaknesses. You will be rooting for them to let go of their insecurities and fears. Add the adventure of mining gold and finding love and this novel will not disappoint! A great western historical romance, Sourdough Creek is sure to win your heart over! I am now fan and cannot wait to get my hands on another Caroline Fyffe novel!
