The Christmas Doll by Jason F. Wright, Book Review

Book Summary:

Christmas is fast approaching, but in the Saxton home, there is no money for gifts. Could there still be something special for Gail underneath the tree?

In The Christmas Doll, best-selling author Jason F. Wright shares a true story from the life of Gail Saxton Miller, billionaire businesswoman and owner of the Utah Jazz NBA team. But Gail's childhood was vastly different from her life now—facing poverty in the 1940s, the Saxton family made ends meet by turning their small home into rental apartments and made do with hand-me-downs and secondhand items.

However, their humble circumstances didn't stop the Saxtons from being rich in what mattered most: self-less acts of love, the rewards of a job well done, and the hope and renewal we can feel through Jesus Christ. All of these lessons come together at Christmastime, when Gail learns of love and sacrifice through a single, precious gift.

The Christmas Doll teaches a wise lesson about the true meaning of the holiday. Christmas isn't just about beautiful decorations or shiny, expensive gifts; it's about the miracle of Jesus to make old things new, revitalize our lives, and bring out the best in humankind to care for another.

Book Review:

The Christmas Doll is not just a beautiful story about the true meaning of Christmas, but it also has beautiful illustrations to go along with it. I was drawn to Gail and her story of the brand new doll she received for Christmas and loved and cherished. Then it became old, forgotten, and discarded. Everyone can relate to feeling forgotten or discarded like the doll was. I loved how Wright brought the story full circle at the end and reminded his audience how the Savior can make us all new again. I received a copy of this book for free, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Kit and Elizabeth by Karen Tuft, New Release Book Review

Book Summary:

Lady Elizabeth Spaulding’s world has fallen apart. Despite living her entire life to please her demanding parents, the Duke and Duchess of Marwood, she has little to show for it. After Elizabeth’s second failed betrothal, her father’s debts and appalling acts of retaliation force him to flee the country, consigning Elizabeth and her bitter mother to a life of poverty and exile. But Elizabeth’s fortunes change one day when an elderly acquaintance makes her an offer she can’t refuse.

Lady Walmsley, widowed and childless, is in need of a lady’s companion—and who better than the lovely Lady Elizabeth? Determined to rescue Elizabeth from her dreary life in the country, Lady Walmsley secures the help of Kit, the dashing Earl of Cantwell, in her quest. But the young woman they find is a ghost of the charming girl they once knew. Taken in by Lady Walmsley, and with Kit’s enthusiastic encouragement, Elizabeth finds herself pushed further and further from her empty solitude as she discovers the joy of truly living. Now, for the first time in her life, she must decide for herself who she is and if she deserves to be loved.

My Review:

Man, I really cannot say enough about this book. It certainly isn't a run-of-the-mill regency. Hardship like you could never imagine befalls Lady Elizabeth and she endures things no one should ever have to. Watching the dynamic between Kit and Elizabeth was a wonder to see unfold and I could not get enough of their interactions. Kit challenged Elizabeth to be daring, bold, and step outside of her comfort zone! The metamorphosis she experiences is one you get to see for yourself as you step inside of her world. From the major character to the minor ones, I loved every one of them! This is definitely a regency novel you do not want to miss!

The Piper's Pursuit by Melanie Dickerson (Hagenheim #10), Book Review

Book Summary:

A plague of rats. Children going missing. A giant beast attacking just outside the walls of Hamlin. And one young woman determined to save her town.

Katerina’s stepfather, Hennek, is neither a good father nor a good husband, but he is the mayor of Hamlin. Could he somehow be causing the misfortunes that have befallen her beloved town? The evidence points to a beast of unusual size—a wolf, perhaps, or a large dog—killing people who venture too far from town. But does that explain the disappearance of so many children, many of whom seem to have gone missing from inside the town walls?

Steffan knows he must reconcile with his father, the Duke of Hagenheim, but he’s not sure he’s ready. In the meantime, he roams from town to town seeking adventure and reward. When he hears of a giant beast terrorizing the town of Hamlin and an equally giant reward that includes gold, money, and the mayor’s daughter in marriage, he heads to Hamlin. Steffan plans to kill the beast, rid the town of its rat infestation, and take the reward—everything except the girl in marriage. However, when he meets Katerina, he’s not so sure. Perhaps his plans need changing.

Katerina is hunting the Beast of Hamlin for herself, determined to win liberation from her conniving and controlling stepfather. When she finds one of the children who has been missing for many months, dirty and wandering around the woods, the mystery only seems to deepen. Katerina will have to team up with Steffan, the handsome but brash duke’s son who infuriates her—he’s the only one in town who isn’t controlled by the mayor. Danger dogs them from both man and beast. Can Katerina and Steffan stop the “Pied Piper” from stealing every last child from Hamlin? Or will their interference create an even worse fate?

My Review:

Dickerson has become one of my favorite authors of all time. She takes a fairy tale, re-invents it, and then has her characters learn to turn to God to help them. What a wonderful way to write a story, especially in this day and age! The Piper's Pursuit is a take on the Pied Piper and it was wonderfully done. Huge beasts are on the loose, rats have over run the town, and children are going missing. What is happening to the town of Hamlin? Kat is their protector until Steffan shows up and tries to help. (I am so glad Steffan got his own story) Could he help and would Kat let him? I have to say that the villains are truly horrid in this story, I despised them and what they were doing! Dickerson had me so caught up in the town of Hamlin, that everything truly felt real, as if I was watching it unfold before my eyes. A masterful story-teller, Dickerson has once again worked her magic on yet another book!

In the middle of her graduate degree, Bree has no time or desire for working on her dating life, or lack thereof, but the impossibly handsome Clint McCarthy coming back into her life makes everything complicated. My Review:

This book was fantastic from page one until the very end. In fact, it was so good that I could not even put it down! The characters were engaging,  funny, and had this undeniable connection. Bree and Clint's connection was palpable! I loved the links to the Belltown Six Series, although in no way do you need to have read them. I loved the connection! If every book in this series is as great as Faceoff, I will devour each and every one!

To Die To Sleep by Stephanie Black, Blog Tour & Giveaway!

Book Summary:

After surviving a difficult year, Natalie Marsh is heading for Ellsberg Keep, an exclusive mountain resort that promises to provide the tranquility she desperately needs. She’s eager to relax and to reconnect with her estranged cousin Lily, who works as the Keep’s nurse—a reunion that begins abruptly when an accident on the winding mountain roads lands Natalie in the infirmary in the care of her cousin. They have little time to bond over childhood memories, however. Everything is thrown into chaos when the owner of the Keep is rushed to the medical wing, wildly delusional and raving about a murder plot.

Despite Lily’s care, the owner dies. Is his death simply an accident, or are his frenzied suspicions true? Determined to help Lily cope with the loss of her patient—and the accusations that she’s to blame for his death—Natalie searches for answers and is swept into a mystery that grows more puzzling as frightening hallucinations torment the dead man’s son. When a staff member who asks too many questions disappears, it is clear that this idyllic resort harbors someone with deadly intent—and Natalie may not survive to uncover the truth.

My Review:

I wasn’t sure where this book was going to take me. I wasn’t expecting a fortress type castle getaway in the dead of winter! Talk about things that make you go “hmmmm”. Little did I know I was in for an insane roller coaster ride. Black kept me guessing and every time I thought I had it figured out, another twist, another turn. And I didn’t know who Natalie could trust, so why was she trusting anyone?  I became so paranoid I felt no one was trustworthy and I was internally screaming at her to stop sharing all of this information!!! Didn't she know there was a killer on the loose? A true whodunnit worthy of Sherlock Holmes, To Die, To Sleep is the perfect blend of mystery and suspense. You won’t want to sleep because you will be up finishing the very last page.....and wondering how in the world it all happened. I am still rethinking it, mind blown. Five stars for this fantastic novel, it blew me away!  I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

About author Stephanie Black:

I’ve enjoyed making up stories since I was a child, when my sisters and I would play long Barbie games full of intrigue and danger, or write and direct plays for ourselves and our younger siblings. I took a creative writing class in high school, but my stories stunk, since I hadn’t yet figured out that a story needs a plot. An encouraging comment from the teacher got me rolling in the right direction (thank you, Mrs. Owen!) and my final story for that class eventually developed--after many years, much studying of fictional technique, and countless hours of writing and rewriting--into my first published novel: The Believer, a dystopian thriller, was published in 2005 by Covenant Communications.

Four of my contemporary mysteries are Whitney Award winners for Best Mystery/Suspense, and my second dystopian novel was a Whitney Award Finalist for Best Speculative Novel. My novella “An Eye for an Eye” was part of the RONE Award-winning anthology Timeless Romance: Autumn Suspense collection.

My husband Brian and I have five children, two children-in-law (with one more on deck), and a rather majestic cat. I love spending time with my family, enjoy homemade pizza and anything chocolate, and have recently developed a fondness for LEGO projects. I play the violin in a community symphony (but never practice enough), and always have unmatched socks, post-laundry. At the center of everything that matters most is my love for the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Maggie's Place by Annette Haws, Blog Tour & Giveaway!!!

Book Summary:

Years ago, Mary Margaret Sullivan changed her name, boxed up her previous life, moved into the Eagle Gate Apartments, and hid her painful memories in her chicken-wire storage unit in the basement. But secrets have an inconvenient way of surfacing when least expected.

Three weeks before Christmas, an elegant man in a penthouse, a young woman named Carly—homeless and ill with pneumonia—and two calculating thieves invade Maggie’s carefully reconstructed life, and in different ways, each is connected to Maggie’s difficult past. As Maggie and friends nurse Carly back to health, hearts begin to heal with a hope for the future. But all is not as it seems. When faced with the shocking truth, Maggie must rely on her wits, her friends, and her own strength as never before.

My Review:

I really fell in love with Maggie's Place! I felt like Maggie had such a story to share and too many things she was holding on to from the past. I loved the community of amazing friends she had and the support they all showed for each other. The entire story was about Maggie, her story, and her journey. There were parts of this story that were fun, happy, sad, tragic, emotional, bittersweet...this book covers an entire range of emotions. If you are willing, take a walk to Maggie's Place, and you will find that you will never want to leave. More than your typical book, Maggie's Place is a story of love, forgiveness, giving, and most of all....hope.

Can they even dare to hope for a holiday miracle?

My Review:

This is a story about a matchmaker who enjoys setting people up with the intent that their relationship will last. While Valentina, the matchmaker, was not a huge part of the story, her character was unforgettable and truly genuine. I liked that there was no ulterior motive for Valentina, just a desire to make two people happy. I enjoyed watching the relationship develop between Tiffany and Roger. To be honest there were a couple of twists I did not see coming which as a reader, I really appreciated. I like to be surprised and to not know exactly how everything will turn out. This is a nice and easy read for someone who enjoys contemporary romance!

The Heart of the Rebellion by Sian Ann Bessey, Blog Tour & Giveaway!

Book Summary:

September 1400

King Richard II of England is dead. And after three years in His Majesty’s service, Rhys ap Tudor and his brother Gwilym are finally free to return to their ancestral home in North Wales. Their long- anticipated homecoming is overshadowed, however, by the harsh changes they encounter in their once peaceful land. The new king, Henry IV, rules with an iron fist, and the country is ripe for rebellion. Instantly thrust into the forefront of the conflict, the proud Tudor brothers enter the fight for their freedom.

Lady Catrin Buckley is alert to the unrest swirling around her. As the daughter of an English father and a Welsh mother, she knows too well the trouble her lineage poses. Her own battle, however, is one of the heart: she is to be married to a man she neither knows nor loves. Then an unexpected encounter with the enigmatic Rhys ap Tudor changes everything. Soon, Catrin finds herself swept into a rebellion that could not only change history but also rewrite her own future.

My Review:

This book was so well written I felt like I was there and in the freezing cold in Wales. I loved the character building and getting to know each person. The changes in Lady Catrin was a beautiful transformation. Rhys was swoon worthy and everything a noble and man of honor should be. The love story was woven seamlessly within the historical context. What would you do for love? That is what I felt myself contemplating as I read this book. The struggles, the sacrifices, the courage it took to live during this time, I am amazed. I find myself weeks later still thinking about this story. This is so much more than a love story, it is about love of country, love of your birthright, love of what is right, and most of all following your heart.

A Royal Christmas Wish by Lizzie Shane, Blog Tour

Book Information:
Title: A Royal Christmas Wish
Genre: Holiday Romance
Life isn’t a fairytale…
Until it is.

Jenny knows she isn’t the princess type. Sure, she’s friendly and caring, but with her clumsiness and lack of self-confidence, glass slippers would only make her trip. When Dom, the cute guy she runs into in Central Park, turns out to be the prince of San Noelle, she figures he must not be her happy ever after.

But a mysterious countess grants Jenny’s one wish, and she finds herself married to this handsome prince! Unfortunately, at the stroke of midnight on Christmas night, her life will go back to normal.

In funny and touching ways, Jenny navigates the palace’s traditions the best she can. But even as she grows closer to Dom, the clock is ticking. With love and a little holiday magic, could she somehow make the enchantment last forever?

This royal romance includes a free Hallmark original recipe for Chicken Shawarma.

My Review:

With easy to fall for characters, a prince and a regular girl, this story is every hopeless romantic's dream! I loved the normalcy of Jenny and how I could see some of myself in her.  She had such a fun personality, loved dogs, and was looking to find her path in life. Most people can relate to wanting to find your path and your person in life. I loved the Christmas fairy and the smell of peppermint every time she came. You never knew what you were going to get with her! She kept me on my toes and guessing! And the dream/fairy tale, was it real, was it a dream... what was it?!? It drove me crazy in a good way! Christmas, a prince, and a fairy tale dream is the perfect combination! I read it in one sitting and I am wishing for another book, it was that good! I loved every second of this fairytale Christmas romance and highly recommend it! I received a copy of this book for free, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

My Review:

A short Christmas movie, the story drew me in and held my children's attention as well as mine. This is a serious storyline about a family grieving the loss of their mother and wife. It is also a story illustrating that the faith of a child can work miracles. I loved that faith was a such a part of it and that it showed us that even when things seem to be impossible, with God, anything is possible. Can a Christmas miracle happen for Emily? Will her sister find her faith again? This is definitely a short Christmas movie worth watching. It has a beautiful message about faith.

Glass Slippers Ever After and Me by Julie Wright, Book Review

Book Summary:

Can the fairy tale bring Charlotte the happiness she’s looking for, or was he always there to begin with?

A modern, reimagined Cinderella story.

When aspiring author Charlotte Kingsley finally gets published, she thinks all her dreams have come true. But the trouble begins when her publicity firm reinvents her quirky online presence into a perfectly curated dream life. Gone are the days of sweatpant posts and ice cream binges with her best friend, Anders, replaced instead with beautiful clothes, orchestrated selfies, and no boyfriend. Only, that carefully curated fairy tale life is ruining her self-esteem and making her feel like a fraud.

When a bestselling author takes Charlotte under her wing—almost like a fairy godmother—she helps Charlotte see the beautiful person she already is and the worth of being authentic. But is it too late to save her relationship with Anders? The clock is quickly ticking towards midnight, and Charlotte must decide between her fairy tale life and the man she loves, before he's gone forever.

My Review:

I absolutely loved Charlotte's story and let me tell you why! Charlotte is completely relatable to every woman out there. She is normal, down-to-earth and she just wants her dreams to come true. What woman in the world doesn't want that? She has a job that is just that... a job. She wants to become a published author so badly and her best friend Anders has been there and continues to be there the entire journey. But oh the twists and turns Charlotte's life begins to take! And she is trying to be a good friend and keep up with this new image the publishing company wants her to portray. Somewhere along the way she seems to lose sight of who she is and what is important. I literally could not put this book down you guys! I had the painful, burning eyes I was so tired, but I HAD to finish Charlotte's story! Would she have her happily ever after? Or was what she thought would make her happy all along, not what really would bring her happiness? Buckle up because this is one book that will take you on a fun and emotional ride you will not forget! I cannot wait to see what amazing story Wright comes up with next!

Loving Like Jane by Connie E. Sokol, Book Review

Book Summary:

Allie’s dream of writing a best-selling novel for a top literary agent is finally coming true. Except, she has already agreed to go on a bucket list Jane Austen Tour for three weeks with her newly-divorced aunt and widowed mother. To complicate matters, Allie can’t decide what the Best Novel Ever idea should be, and the first three chapters are due in, what else, three weeks. Determined to buckle down, Allie devotes her time to writing while refusing to engage in the trip’s delights, or gorgeous but enigmatic Beckett, the assistant tour director. Despite her attempts to stay focused, Allie is drawn to Beckett's quick wit, Jane Austen wisdom, and deciding if his help will further her dreams or get in the way. Join Allie on her inspiring, hilarious, and romantic adventure as she learns how loving like Jane Austen creates unexpected changes that could lead to the life she loves.

My Review:

Loving Like Jane is one of those stories that took a bit for me to really get into. However, once I did get into it, I found myself not wanting to put it down. I was cheering for Allie to find her way; find out what she really wanted. Was it Tate with his over-the-top shows of his love? Was it writing the perfect novel? What was it for Allie? Her character was down-to-earth and refreshing. She cared about her family and anyone else who came into her life. Beckett was one of those characters that is mysterious and charming, all-intriguing with the ladies old and young swooning over him. The setting being on a Jane Austen tour was so awesome and I enjoyed seeing things unfold from both Allie and Beckett's perspectives.  Overall, this book is a winner for me. It has amazing characters I loved and am still thinking about, and it has a feel-good vibe to it. I have to admit, I want more. I want to know some things that went unresolved and I need to know what happens to the other girls from the Princeton Ladies. A refreshing contemporary romance novel, Loving Like Jane is a must-read for any Austen fan! I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

'Twas the Kiss Before Christmas by Susan Hatler, Book Review

Book Summary:

Faith Sterling relishes experiencing the great outdoors in style, so her job at Silver Bells Luxury Tours in Christmas Mountain, Montana is ideal. Sure, business has been slow of late, but hopefully the influx of tourists for the holiday season will give them the much-needed boost in sales they need.

Adam Kline is a city-boy who inherited Silver Bells Luxury Tours when his dad passed away. Adam regrets not spending more time with his dad due to his busy work schedule heading a PR firm in Manhattan. Since the store is a painful reminder of that fact, he wants nothing more than to sell it.

But Adam doesn’t count on Faith, who’s determined to show him how fantastic her small mountain town is, and convince him to keep the store and his dad’s dream alive. Soon, Adam is thinking about more than the future of the store—he’s thinking of a future with Faith.

Will the enchanting outdoor excursions be enough to convince Adam to take a chance on keeping the store open? More importantly, will a little Christmas magic help Faith and Adam remember that business is business, but love is what matters most of all?

My Review:

I was drawn into this amazing Christmas adventure with Faith and Adam, and I am going to be honest, I never wanted it to end! Christmas Mountain is the perfect setting with the gorgeous mountain and quaint town. Faith was so fun and full of spirit! She was positive, beautiful, and pretty sneaky (or resourceful). Her best laid plans were constantly derailed by her new boss, Adam Kline. While he was a tall, dark drink of water, she could not let herself be distracted by that! No, she needed to focus on saving her favorite place and her job. This is a charming and fun story full of all my favorite things; romance, Christmas, and those swoon-worthy  moments!

Hadley Baker can’t believe her boyfriend finally invited her on a fancy hotel dinner date only to break up with her in public. Even more unbelievable is the moment FBI Agent JD Byers finds her crying in the women’s restroom and demands she evacuate. Seconds after JD ushers Hadley outside, an explosion shatters the building. Could her life be any more disastrous?

JD didn’t anticipate seeing Hadley, the beautiful schoolteacher, again after he saved her from the hotel attack. But soon after her ex-boyfriend became a lead suspect of the hotel bombing, the man turned up dead—and now it seems that Hadley herself is a target. Determined to keep her safe, JD shelters Hadley as they join forces to put together the pieces of the perplexing case. When they discover the horrifying truth behind her ex-boyfriend’s nefarious work, Hadley realizes her life is far from the only one being threatened. Countless others are in danger, and she and JD may hold the key to saving them.

My Review:

Abramson has a way of telling an action/suspense story like no one else can! She starts off with a bang (literally a bang) and the action seems to never stop! Hadley is just this average person; a school teacher who loves her students and has a boyfriend. Until he publicly dumps her during a dinner with his colleagues. Hadley is quite suddenly thrown into the path of JD as he is clearing a building because of a bomb. Thrown together under unusual circumstances, Hadley and JD begin to try to unravel the mystery of who her boyfriend really is and what he was a part of. I love a book that I cannot put down because I have to know how it ends. This is that book! Every time I thought I had something figured out, Abramson would throw another curve ball my way. I love action/suspense novels and romance...this is the book is the perfect blend of both worlds! If you want a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this is the book for you! I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Happy Reading!!!
