An Unexpected Date by Susan Hatler

Image
About the book: Holly loves living in her cozy mountain town and all the surrounding beauty soothes her soul. She treasures beading jewelry for her own small business while watching nature and its amazing creatures outside her window. But, her mom begs her to move back to the city so she can find a man to marry. Holly doesn’t want to give up on her dreams, but does that mean she’ll have to give up on love? My Review: Small, yet very satisfying, this short novella does not lack!   Just because it is short, don't discount it!  Holly's story is one you will enjoy reading.  An Unexpected Date is like a mini dessert you order at the end of your meal, it hits the spot!  If you need a great way to end your day, this little book is just the treat you are looking for!  (I would love it if Ms. Hatler decided to make this one a full-length novel)  Five stars!***** You can pick up the book via amazon here. Happy Reading!!! Source:  Autho...

About this book: A TIME TO LIVE. A TIME TO DIE. A TIME TO DREAM. Sleep disorders specialist Kennedy Plain has been diagnosed with a fatal brain tumor. When her research subject dies after trying to convince her he has achieved dream-induced time travel and her study is shelved, she enlists herself as a subject to complete her research. And yet, the more time she spends with the medieval warrior, the more difficult it is to believe he is capable of committing the heinous crime for which he has been reviled for 600 years. About the book: The battle against magic is easily won, but not even magic can truly control love... To Kord, witches are a necessary evil. They cast charms for good weather and crops, but otherwise they're best avoided. But when Kord succumbs to a love spell and starts yearning for a woman he's never met, he refuses to let magic control his destiny. He tracks down the witch responsible—only to discover she is the irresistible woman of his dreams. Like her mother and grandmother before her, Charmaine casts charms for a living. As a witch, she spends her life helping others, not being helped. So when her spells begin misfiring, she has nowhere to turn. Until a handsome farmer arrives demanding she break a love spell, and Charmaine realizes he holds the key to her misspells. But what if solving his problem comes at the cost of her heart's desire? My Review: The Misspelled Charm will charm it's way into your heart!  A sweet novella about a love spe...

Tempest Unleashed by Tracy Deebs

Image
About the book: Tempest Maguire is happy with her decision to embrace her mermaid nature and live among her mother’s clan within the ocean’s depths. Even though training to one day ascend the throne for the aging mermaid queen is rigorous, she finds refuge in the arms of Kona, the selkie who first opened her up to her mermaid side. But when word comes that one of her brothers has been gravely injured on land, Tempest immediately rushes to his side—which also brings her back to her old flame, Mark. And in her absence, a deadly battle begins raging at the hands of Tempest’s old nemesis, the sea witch Tiamat. As the dangerous war erupts, Tempest’s two loves—Kona and Mark, sea and land—will collide for the first time, both to protect her and to force her to choose. My Review:  I want to preface my review.  I have not read Tempest Rising, the first book in the series.  So this is my first experience with these characters.  I absolutely loved Tempes...

The Last Seer and the Tomb of Enoch by Ashland Menshouse

Image
About the book: Do you believe? Can a ghost haunt more than your home? Can a Sasquatch track more than footprints? Aubrey Taylor's quaint and cozy life in the subdued, Appalachian town of Lake Julian had never been exceptional. Shouldered by his lifelong friends, Buzz Reiselstein and Rodriqa Auerbach, he quietly endured the puerile punishments of a persistent pack of pesky bullies that included the most-feared kid in school, Magnos Strumgarten, and his own obnoxiously, well-accomplished brother, Gaetan. Comfortable in his humdrum niche of the absolutely average, Aubrey never pushed back. Until...fate dug a little too deep...and the unseen darkness of unspoken places rattled his mediocrity. When spurious specters and elusive mountain men battle for a tomb of Watchers, buried in ages past, only those who choose to look beyond the surface feel the grip of the ancients' revenge. Unusual disappearances, a colorful cadre of insightful townsfolk...

Still His Woman by Jewel Adams

Image
About this novelette: After being diagnosed with ovarian cancer and undergoing a hysterectomy, Raine's dreams of having more children are shattered, and she begins to doubt her importance as a woman. Hayden loves Raine with a passion that could never be denied, and though she tries to hide her feelings, he can see her loss of self-worth and it hurts him deeply. When the unthinkable happens, Raine's world is shattered and Hayden wonders if she will ever be okay again. He is bound and determined to heal her battered soul with his love. But will it be enough? My Review: Whenever I need a quick pick-me-up from a book, I know I can always turn to one of Jewel Adams' novelettes!  Still His Woman pulled me in right from the start.  I love Raine and Hayden, they were a couple that I felt like I knew.  Raine's sadness and inadequate feelings of not being able to bear more children is heart-wrenching and her emotions and perspective translated well througho...

To escape from his emotional turmoil, Kevin has developed his imagination into a dangerous foil and a powerful ally. Trusting the Law by Kendall Evans

Image
About this book: Chicago November 1922 The last person Grace needs to fall in love with is a police officer, especially since she breaks the law every day. Running a speakeasy wasn’t her first choice, but making money is. With the price of hooch at an all-time premium, the money is more than enough to pay for her uncle’s expensive medication and the bills. She doubts Officer Paul Gordon will see things the same way. Paul is enchanted with the chestnut-haired woman he runs into on a cold, Chicago street, and that enchantment quickly turns to more. If someone were to tell him she was a criminal, he’d never believe it. Then he sees it for himself. When Grace is arrested, he must make a decision—protect her or his badge. My Review: Trusting the Law is a unique historical novel set during the Prohibition Era.  Grace can't seem to make ends meet and takes up running a speakeasy to pay the bills.  She meets a police officer one night and sparks fly between the...

Promises by Carolyn Twede Frank

Image
About this book: Hattie is barely twelve when her pa’s “business adventures” disrupt her family and move them to the new town of Tropic, nestled in the shadows of old Ebenezer Bryce’s Canyon. Her pa views the town as opportunity. Hattie is hopelessly shy and views it with apprehension; she dreads the task of making new friends. More than anything else, Hattie wants to be like her father—not afraid of meeting new people, talking to strangers, and standing up for herself. So it is with trepidation that she accepts her pa’s challenge and promises to make new friends. Hattie forms more promises as she struggles to make friends, finding companionship in places she wouldn’t have expected and learning that there is a difference between complaining and standing up for oneself. My Review:   Promises is a wonderful LDS novel geared toward middle graders.  As an adult, I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to any LDS reader from middle grade on up....

Indebted by Amy A. Bartol

Image
About the book: I hang my head in sorrow for just a moment when I know I am truly alone. I feel like I’m going to my execution, just as he had said. Then I move forward again. I hop a fence of fieldstone and cross a field dotted with Queen Anne’s lace. Goose bumps rise on my arms as I pass the cluster of windmills that I have seen in a dream. The scent is sweet in the field though, not the scent of heat, like it had been when it was forced upon me in visions. I gaze down the hill, beyond the small, whitewashed house that I knew would be there. The church looms dark and grim with its rough-hewn, timber facade, capped by tall, oblong spires reaching to the sky. Black, ominous clouds have collected above the roofline, as if Heaven is showing me the way. My Review: I LOVED IT!  The 400+ pages flew by and I could have easily read 400 more!  Indebted picks up where Intuition left off.  Evie, Reed, Zephyr and Buns are planning their strategy against...

Red Rock by Kimberly Patterson

Image
About the book: Red Rock follows the journey of the Hunter family, and their daughter Rachel, a teenager struggling to take care of her ill mother. Her illness forces the family to sell everything and move to a new town where they can get help for her. Along the way, they stumble into fortune and decide to keep it a secret. But with every secret, comes a consequence and Rachel will soon find out that not everything or everyone is what they seem. Upon arrival in the new town, she meets several people who befriend her and the plan seems to be working, until one night when someone throws a rock through their window threatening to take back what is theirs. Lies, deceit and betrayal plague Rachel and the entire family as they struggle to keep their secret and find out who is behind the devious plan. My Review:   I was excited to read a western romance book because I love a good western!  In Red Rock I was expecting to find a sweet romance story....

Interrupted by Rachel Coker

About the book: Can love really heal all things? If Sam Carroll hadn't shown up, she might have been able to get to her mother in time. Instead, Allie Everly finds herself at a funeral, mourning the loss of her beloved mother. She is dealt another blow when, a few hours later, she is sent from Tennessee to Maine to become the daughter of Miss Beatrice Lovell, a prim woman with a faith Allie cannot accept. Poetry and letters written to her mother become the only things keeping Allie's heart from hardening completely. But then Sam arrives for the summer, and with him comes many confusing emotions, both toward him and the people around her. As World War II looms, Allie will be forced to decide whether hanging on to the past is worth losing her chance to be loved. My Review: I wasn't really sure what to expect of this book.  I read it because I had read a review that said it was great.  I am really happy that I did!  This is a wonderful novel set befor...

The Curse Girl by Kate Avery Ellison

Image
About the book: When Bee is imprisoned in a magical, cursed house because of her father's selfish choices, she has just one plan... escape! But she must solve a riddle and help her fellow prisoners break the curse that binds them all before she can leave, and that is proving more difficult than she originally thought thanks to the bitter young master of the house, Will. Will wants nothing to do with Bee or her help (and he certainly isn't planning on falling in love with her), but he might have underestimated just how determined and clever--and irresistible--she can be. My Review: A modern retelling of Beauty and the Beast, The Curse Girl has some twists and variations to the original story that keep you turning the pages!   I devoured the book in one sitting and it was such a great book, I couldn’t put it down!  I love retellings of fairy tales; I own many and have read many versions.  Kate Avery Ellison’s is among one of the best I have ...
