Radiance: Love after Death by Debra Jayne East

About the book:

When Marena Jacobs drove home on a cold, rainy night to Eden, North
Carolina, she never expected to meet the man of her dreams, after she
died. Surviving a near fatal car accident, she slowly recovers from a
traumatic brain injury and crushed leg. In the months ahead, she
remains haunted by what happened in the seconds of time she passed from in to death. Was it real or imagined?
Before the accident, her life had almost come to a tragic end.
Contemplating suicide, she found a crooked heart-shaped stone in the
grass that saved her. She realized that it carried a message. "Even
though your heart is broken, it's still a heart, you can still love."
A stranger was about to prove to her how true that was!

My Review:

Radiance: Love after Death is not your typical love story. Marena Jacobs has a broken heart and spirit after a divorce from her husband who left her for another woman. One night driving home from work she is in a terrible car accident, dies, and comes back to life. While she was dead she meets a man that she knows loves her...an angel.
Join Marena on her journey to find out if her heart really can love again. Who is this man that has shown up at her door? Is he the one that can heal her heart?
I liked this novel and the very different take it has on a traditional love story. It will have you asking yourself, "Can my love stand the test of time?" and "Do I have a love that is eternal?" Hopefully you will come away from reading this with a new appreciation for LIFE! Appreciate every day and live it to it's fullest. Not only is this a great love story, but it is also an inspiration to those who read it, to appreciate the love in their lives and the life they have to enjoy that love.  Overall, I really liked the book, however the middle was a little slow-moving for me.

Traitor's Daughter by Lily Dewaruile

 About the book:

Blaentywi, Summer, AD927, in the reign of Hywel Dda
Always despised and humiliated by her relatives, Heledd Ieuan expects worse now that she has come of age. Since her father’s betrayal of his brother, she has been a prisoner of war, held hostage to ensure the good behavior of the survivors among his friends. She has recurring visions of the slaughter of her family, but except the menacing dream of a warrior, no memories remain of her life before her endless labor as a bond servant. Heledd’s skill in the diary has kept her from a life in the warriors’ barracks. Bruises, blisters and aching muscles are small prices to pay to avoid the nightmare of life as a warrior’s whore.

 My Review:

This book is very different from most novels I have read. The story is not your typical happily ever after romance. Heledd faces challenges, many which are difficult to read about. She is called horrible names and her uncle and cousins treat her horribly. Despite this Heledd shows that she has strong character and is very strong-willed. She can bite her tongue when others would not and she endures her trials well. Garmon is a good character as well, very honorable and kind. I liked the two of them and the fireworks that seemed to ensue when they were together. The book was interesting and I wanted to find out what would happen to Heledd and Garmon. Would they ever realize their true feelings for each other and verbalize them? You will have to read the book to find out!

The author uses some foreign words throughout this book. A few of the words are explained but the rest are not. A big help would have been a word guide explaining the definitions of each of the foreign words.  Also, I felt that I would have understood the novel better if there had been a foreword explaining the time period and customs in which the story takes place.   There was a time in the book that the characters moved locations and I re-read it and realized there was nothing to alert the reader that they moved.  Overall, it is a nice book with a good story line, it just takes a while to get there. (I also feel it important to note that there are some descriptive sex scenes in this book but the characters are married).

The Emerald Talisman by Brenda Pandos

 About the book:

To be normal, sixteen-year-old Julia Parker would shed her empathic gift in a second. Life has been difficult since her mother's mysterious disappearance ten years earlier - an event she witnessed, but can't remember. Julia's situation becomes more complicated after a near death experience from a blood thirsty stalker. As high school students go missing it is clear there is a connection to her own experience--past and present. Someone has to stop the madness and a chance encounter with a creepy psychic foretells that only Julia is the key to stopping the madness, but it may require the life of the one she loves.
My Review:

I downloaded this book from amazon because it was on the top 100 free list. I actually downloaded it because of the cover and I had no clue what the book was even about. I started reading it and was not sure at first, where this story would go. But then it drew me in and I found myself caught up in this story of Julia Parker. She has a special ability to read other people's emotions but she has never told anyone. Her mother disappeared when she was five and no one knows what happened to her.
Then on her way home from work, she runs out of gas and her cell phone is dead. Should she walk down the road to her house or take the short-cut through the woods? She decides to cut through the woods and that decision changes the course of her life permanently.
She feels someone's emotions and they want to kill her. She runs and trips and falls. She catches a branch or she would have fallen down a cliff. She starts screaming for help and someone comes and fights whoever or whatever wanted to kill her. Then he rescues her and Julia finds herself really liking this guy in a short amount of time. I won't ruin the story because it is a good one; I will simply say that you have to read the rest to find out where it goes.
A couple of things to consider: 1) This is a vampire book. 2) It can be consider a spin-off of Twilight (although I think it has it's own original story) and 3) This is a series of three books.
I give this book 3.5 to 4 stars. I like vampire books and I liked this story enough to read it in about a day. Hopefully the second and third books are even better than this one :)

Shaken by Susan Hatler

About the book:
"High school junior, Kylie Bates, can suddenly read minds. When she touches people’s hands, she’s able to see their deepest thoughts. As if that’s not freaky enough, her dad sends her to help hottie detective, Sam Williams, track down a missing girl. Way too much pressure, especially for a girl who can’t watch Scream without getting nightmares.

Then, finding the missing girl leads to much more than Kylie’s prepared for. Like discovering that her dad has been lying to her. That she has a family she never knew about. That the girls have powers similar to hers. Oh yeah, and that someone is out to get her.

When the detective’s teenage wanna-be-cop cousin, Trip Williams, approaches Kylie at school insisting she help him solve the case, she discovers Trip might be the only one she can trust, and the only one to help her unravel the secrets behind her mysterious gift. "

I could not put this book down! It was amazing, fast-paced and action-packed, with a little bit of teenage crushing in there too! Kylie Bates is just a regular high school teenager until she shakes a salesman's hand and BAM! She can read his thoughts! All of a sudden she can read minds! She tells her Dad and then the next day he asks her to go with a police detective to help find a missing girl.
This book will take you on a roller coaster ride of emotions! You really feel for Kylie as she finds out that her Dad has been lying to her for her entire life, this little girl that went missing looks just like her, and there are other girls too that seem like they are related to her and have special abilities to boot! Join Kylie as she tries to solve these mysteries and find out who she really is!
Hats off to Susan Hatler for a five star book! I didn't know what to expect from this novel and now I am impatiently awaiting the next one in the series! It can't be out soon enough for me!

I received this book free in exchange for my honest review.

Operation Christmas Hearts by Kay Springsteen

Excerpt from the book:
Ashley Torrington never cared much about Christmas before. But this year she’s having a particularly blue holiday because Marine Special Operations Team member, Nick Turner got under her skin just before he was deployed to Afghanistan. With her neighbors’ precocious daughter Bella volunteering Ashley for a special project at school, and a mysterious white-haired stranger named Estelle in town buying gifts from Ashley’s shop, not to mention the odd assortment of presents Ashley’s been receiving from an anonymous source, she shouldn’t have time to worry about her guy. But when he and his team go missing the week before Christmas, she realizes only a Christmas miracle will reunite them.

Captain Nicholas Turner never backed down from challenges—on the battlefield or in his personal life. But he’d never met a challenge like Ashley, who doesn't want to be anyone’s “girl back home.” Now he’s on the other side of the world, wanting to be anywhere but in Afghanistan for Christmas. About to embark on one of the most dangerous missions of his life, he needs Ashley to know she’s much more than the girl he’d left behind, and he does plan to come home to her. But in the meantime, a little Christmas magic would be appreciated. Little does he know, he’s about to get his wish.

My Review:

Operation: Christmas Hearts is a good, clean read. Ashley Torrington is convinced she will never date anyone more than three times, until she meets Nick Turner. She tells him he can only have three dates too, that is her rule, but Nick thinks he can change that. Ashley runs a small art gallery in a small town and Nick is in the military. The story is told from each person's perspective. At first, I didn't like this, but then I began to appreciate each person's perspective. The story is well written and you keep turning the pages to find out what happens. I liked how the lost necklace incident turned out. Overall this book is a great read. My one sadness is that I would have liked more to the ending; an epilogue so I know what happens. More info would have been nice!

Sweet 21 Birthday Ball by J. Adams

Excerpt from the book:
"When Italian pastry chef, Marcello Giannini took the train to visit his parents, he could never have guess how much this one trip would change the course of his life.
Dominique Jensen has only loved one man her entire life, and she has been unable to open her heart to another. Discouraged, she wonders if the dreams and wishes she has fostered for so long will ever come true.

But how long is too long to wait for love

My review:

I really enjoyed this short story. It was well written and I could see how Dominique and Marcello's love for each other grew and changed. I enjoyed how the book began with Dominique bossing Marcello and how he was wrapped around her finger from the first moment. I appreciated how their relationship grew and changed as each year passed when he would come to visit her in the summers. I wasn't sure why Marcello felt that he had to wait until Dominique was twenty-one before he could tell her he loved her. Why not eighteen or nineteen? He had already waited so long for her to grow up. That was my one complaint, I think he should have expressed his love for her sooner. Other than that, it was a perfect short romantic story. The ending was great because I got a glimpse into their life together! I enjoyed reading this book and wished it was longer! If J. Adams decides to make this into a full-length novel I would love it! But it was wonderful as a short story!

Snarky and Sweet by Susan Denney

CAUTION: This review contains spoilers!!!!

A little bit about this book:

"Lee Landry is a French teacher at the only high school in tiny San Pablo, Texas. She has a condo, a small car, and an even smaller retirement fund. She isn't married but has a crush on a fellow teacher who has never gotten around to asking her out.

Her identical twin, Lurlette, is married to multibillionaire Horatio Alger Chang. She lives in a mansion in San José, California. The diamond in her engagement ring is the Maharani Red, one of the largest red diamonds in the world with a price tag of 2.3 million dollars. When Lurlette realizes her marriage is over, she decides to move in with her sister Lee. And even though Lurlette brings jewelry, clothes and a Cézanne still life with her, she doesn't have any cash.

Lee is exasperated. She has never understood why she and Lurlette don't get along. Now that Lurlette is back, Lee knows her quiet life will be disrupted and that her bank account will suffer. What she doesn't know is that her love life, her career, and her future will be forever changed."

I enjoyed this book overall. It was a different take on identical twins. Lurleen, who goes by Lee, is the sweet twin and her sister Lurlette, is the snarky twin. Their relationship is not what you would expect of twin sisters. They argue and disagree most of the time. Lurlette is very self-absorbed and is all about money and her image. Lee just wants a quiet, peaceful life and hopes to one day get married and have a family.
Lurlette crashes at Lee's condo while she gets a divorce and tries to snag her next rich husband. Lee just wants her out and a chance to date her co-worker Halbert. Because Lurlette is still connected to Chang, her soon-to-be ex-husband, she is in the news constantly. She doesn't want to speak to Chang about it, so her twin, Lee does.
Throw in a double-kidnapping and a lot of chaos and then Lurlette is divorced and moving to New York. Lee thinks Chang is nice and that maybe he has feelings for her.
I really had a hard time with the ending of this book. Lee and Chang elope after seeing each other maybe three times total and after having a couple of phone conversations. This was hard for me to swallow because it is so unrealistic to me and very out of Lee's character. I usually don't spoil any endings for anyone, but I couldn't get over this part of the book. Overall it is a fun read and a nice book. I give it three out of five stars.
