Ashes, Ashes by Julie Coulter Bellon Book Review

Are you ever really innocent until proven guilty?

Sophia Naziri is wanted for questioning in the murder of a U.S. senator. She’s worried the police will show up on her doorstep any moment, but when Detective Colby Black appears, it’s to help her put out a kitchen fire, not take her in. Yet. His easy smile and persistence in getting to know her pushes all her troubles to the back of her mind, until a hit man tracks her down. Getting arrested becomes the least of her worries and the handsome detective could be her only way out---if she tells him the truth.

Colby Black’s sniper skills have been a blessing and a curse to him. As a member of a Hostage Negotiation Team, he can use them to save people, but sometimes he can’t protect the innocent despite his best efforts. When a hostage situation goes bad, he tries to put it behind him by helping out his mysterious next-door neighbor, Sophia Naziri. But she pulls Colby into a web of lies and conspiracy that will force him to use every skill he has in order to survive. Faced with the moment of truth, can he trust anyone around him---including the woman at the center of it all?

Book Review:

Ashes, Ashes is a great suspense/action novel with a little bit of romance too! I was intrigued from the beginning of the book when you meet Colby, who is a sniper on a hostage negotiations team. He loves to bake and clean?!? What??? How could I not fall in love with his character? Colby can come over to my house any time he feels stressed :) I really enjoyed the suspense and mystery of the novel. It wasn't one of those where you know what is going to happen and who did what. I was on the edge of my proverbial chair throughout the book until the end. If you are a fan of suspense novels then I highly recommend Ashes Ashes by Julie Coulter Bellon! Five stars!

Save the Date (Better Date than Never #4) by Susan Hatler, Book Review

(Better Date than Never series, Book #4)

Kristen knows men hide things. Case in point, her last boyfriend turned out to be married. Just like anyone else, Kristen is devastated. However, since Kristen evaluates people for a living, her ex’s duplicity has her searching for a new career as well as swearing off men.

Touring history museums with her sexy friend Ethan doesn’t count, because he has a girlfriend, and has only shown friendly interest in Kristen. He even helps with her career counseling tasks. Although Kristen has a secret crush on Ethan, spending time with him is safe. Until she discovers he’s actually single. Gasp. And now he’s flirting with her, too.

Suddenly, Ethan is way too dangerous. Not to mention tempting. Sure, he seems like sixty shades of perfect, but how’s a girl with bad judgment supposed to detect what skeletons he has in his closet?

My Review:

If you haven't read a book from the Better Date than Never series, you are missing out!  Save the Date is a great addition to the series and I felt for Kristen's character, who had been duped by her boyfriend.  She loses faith in her ability to counsel others when she failed to see the flaw in her own boyfriend!  She determines she will never date again, but she has this crush on her friend Ethan.  What will she do?  A fun and flirty romance, you don't want to miss out on Susan Hatler's Save the Date!  It is a quick and easy read that will leave you with a smile on your face!  If you need a book pick-me-up, then anything by Susan Hatler will do the trick!

You can pick up your own copy of Save the Date via Amazon.

The Redeeming (Age of Faith #3) by Tamara Leigh, Book Review

Lady Gaenor Wulfrith is a woman scorned—and now King Henry’s pawn. After three broken betrothals, she is ordered to wed her family’s enemy, a man she has never met and has good reason to fear. Faced with the prospect of an abusive marriage that will surely turn worse for her when her sin is revealed, she flees her family’s home with the aid of a knight—a man who could prove her ruin.

Christian Lavonne, the only remaining heir to the barony of Abingdale, has thrown off his monk’s habit—and God—to minister his lands. Determined to end the devastation wrought by his family’s feud with the Wulfriths, he agrees to marry his enemy’s sister—a woman no man seems to want. When he learns she has fled with a knight who has broken fealty with the Wulfriths, he pursues her, knowing that when they meet his own sin will be revealed and he will be as much in need of redemption as the woman who may carry another man’s child.

My Review:

I am a huge fan of the Age of Faith series by Tamara Leigh and I have been counting down until the release of The Redeeming! It did not disappoint! This book is about Gaenor Wulfrith who in the previous book, fled from an arranged marriage. I really enjoyed the preface where the two main characters get to know each other while one doesn't realize that the other is their betrothed.  Add in a woman who feels that she is less than beautiful, who has committed a sin that is soon to be revealed, and then flees her arranged marriage again! The emotions that were portrayed felt absolutely real, I was completely caught up in the feelings and story-line of the book! Tamara Leigh writes beautifully and I feel like I am seeing, feeling and experiencing everything right along with the characters! If you like Christian novels or medieval romance with some suspense, then you will love The Redeeming! I am so excited there will be another book in the series and I look forward to reading it!

I received a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review.

Rating: Clean/Christian

To Refuse a Rake by Kristin Vayden, Book Review

Emma has sworn off love.

After all, it is pointless to subject oneself to such torture when in the end, heartbreak is inevitable. Just like her sister had suffered. So, when Lord Daventry, the muddy brown-eyed boy from her childhood, returns to society she refuses to even look at him... well, maybe she'll look once.

Or twice.

But only because his eyes have changed into the most decadent color of dark chocolate. And his tanned skin from his travels is distracting, especially paired with his wide and devilish grin.

The stirring of her blood from his hot whisper in her ear is nothing... at least that's what she tells herself.

Lord Daventry has one response to marriage. Drink Brandy. Especially when his mother decides it is time for him to produce an heir. Reluctantly, he attends his first ball since returning from India, swearing to head to White's shortly after the first dance. However, he is pleasantly surprised to discover that Miss Emma Kingsly, the same girl he tried to kiss when she was nine, is still unmarried.

Her frigid demeanor should have warned him off... but unable to ignore a challenge, he plunges in head first... never expecting to fall in love with the one woman in the ton completely set against marriage.

My Review:

I absolutely loved this book!  From the first page to the last, I couldn't stop reading it!  A regency novel at its finest, To Refuse a Rake captured me with Emma's stubborn personality and Hudson's witty banter with her!  I couldn't get enough of the two of them together, they were so engaging and funny!  The house party at Lady's Linden's was one of my favorite scenes, but the best of all was the scene with Hudson, Hewett and Lord Longton!  I won't spoil it for you, just suffice it to say that it is hilarious and will put a smile on your face and make you laugh!  I felt the sizzle of the romance in this book, the hilarity of the banter, and the sadness from mistakes from the past.  If you want a regency romance that will have you feeling a whirlwind of emotions, then To Refuse a Rake is the book for you!

The Ruth Valley Missing by Amber West, Book Review

Jameson Quinn is sick of trying to find herself in the big city. After a gallery opening ends in a trip to the ER and an argument with her self-involved boyfriend, she decides to take off for the peace and quiet of a small town — Ruth Valley.

The small town has everything Brooklyn lacked: simple people, peaceful surroundings, and a feeling of safety. Jameson even finds the perfect house to rent from the town’s most eligible bachelor, Sheriff Jack. Life is finally headed in a promising direction.

But something isn't right. A young man is mysteriously injured, then disappears — and Jameson finds he isn't the only person to suddenly vanish. The suspicious behavior of an abrasive nun and a creepy priest set her off on an investigation of what's really happening. Will she figure out the secrets of Ruth Valley before she's the next to go missing?

My Review:

I literally read this book in one sitting.  ONE.  I couldn't put it down and I kept thinking just one more chapter, but it wasn't enough!  I was quickly caught up in Jameson's story and the more I read, the more I wanted to know.  The underlying mystery kept me on my toes until the very end!  The book is well written and flows nicely and I couldn't get enough of it!  The characters were like people you would meet in any town, anywhere.  They became real to me as did the town.  I wasn't expecting to stay up until after 1am to finish it, but it was a page turner!  A great blend of mystery, small town charm and romance, The Ruth Valley Missing is a book you don't want to miss!  A new fan of Amber West, I look forward to reading more from her soon!

Wren by Rachel Rossano Book Review

A bounty hunter meets a denounced nobleman.

In her world, Wren Romany is as unconventional as they come. Born to a large, devout family and then forced out to fend on her own, she earns her living as a bounty hunter. As her second winter alone looms, she decides to stay in one place for the season. Seeking shelter, she offers her hunting skills in exchange.

Tourth Mynth, the master of the ruined fortress in the valley, needs help. His small household faces a hard winter. As son of a disenfranchised noble, he has plenty of space beneath his roof, but not much to eat. Wren’s offer seems a good fit.

Wren soon learns the residents of Iselyn need more than simply meat on their table. The valley’s residents squirm beneath a harsh master. Unsolved murder and betrayal lurk in the Mynths’ not so distant past. And Tourth’s battle with his emotional scars from the recent civil war will determine the fate of the whole valley.

My Review:

I was literally hooked from the first chapter of this book!  At no time during the book did the pace lag or did I feel like I needed to take a break or put it down.  In fact, just the opposite was true!  I didn't want to put it down and read it continuously!  Wren is a fast-paced action-packed novel full of intriguing characters and a great story-line!  I loved Wren and she became real to me; an amazing woman with no fear of being out of the ordinary! This novel comes full circle and answered almost every question that I had during the book!  That is amazing itself since normally I am always left with many questions.   I promise that if you just give Wren a try, you will be hooked and won't put it down until you are finished!  I am hopeful that this is a start to a new series, hint hint!  Great cover, great story, great characters, great writing!!!

You can pick up your own copy of Wren via AmazonBarnes and Noble, or Smashwords.
