Truth or Date by Susan Hatler Book Review

Better Date than Never Series, Book 2

Gina Hall is done with men who won’t commit. Ten years waiting for her ex to propose wasted her time. Never again. When her friend Kristen starts a game of Truth or Dare, she dares Gina to go on a date with Ethan, who’s amazing and total marriage material.

As Gina plans the going away party for office playboy Chris Bradley, she spontaneously initiates a game of Truth or Dare with him. When his turn comes around, he dares Gina to pose as his girlfriend to help get a flirty colleague off his back. Gina finds playing couple with Chris way too much fun.

Even though Gina and Chris are pretending, their relationship begins to feel painfully real. Fearing she might be falling for another fly-by man, Gina must focus on Ethan so she doesn’t make the same dating mistakes all over again.

My Review:

Susan Hatler has done it again!  Truth or Date is an easy read and the characters grabbed my attention from the beginning!  Gina has had bad luck in love and her new best friend ice cream is fine for her, but not for her friends.  A simple game of Truth or Dare has Gina going out with a handsome man.  Will this be the one for her?
I love Gina's story so much because she didn't try to change or be someone that she wasn't to find love.  I really appreciated her love for ice cream that she refused to give up ( a girl after my own heart)!  A great installment in the Better Date than Never Series, Truth or Date will have you laughing and smiling the whole way through!  I love Susan Hatler's books because they are always easy to read, full of love and life and  never fail to leave me with a smile on my face! You can't go wrong with a Susan Hatler book!  Five stars and I am anxious to read Kristen's story next!

The Bet by Rachel Van Dyken, Guest Review by Andy

"I have a proposition for you..."
Kacey should have run the minute those words left Seattle millionaire Jake Titus's mouth. Instead, she made a deal with the devil in hopes of putting her past behind her once and for all.
Four days.
She could do four days!
But she wasn't counting on Jake’s older brother Travis being there to witness their farce of an engagement.
One thing is for certain.
One brother is right for her.
One wants a lifetime.
And one is in league with the devil.
She should have gotten Jake’s signature in blood.

Andy's Review:

"The Bet" by Rachel Van Dyken is captivating, alluring and leaves the reader in suspense as the POV's rotate between the three main characters. Jake is easy to fall for, but as the story went on I found myself wanting to slap him. Several times. There's laughable moments and a few scenes that'll leave you blushing. This book was an easy read and I loved it! You can relate with Kacey and you'll secretly wish you had a grandma like she does. Even though I think Jake is a piece of work, I still like him and look forward to reading the next book "The Wager".

Elite by Rachel Van Dyken ~Guest Review by Andy

When I won the annual Eagle Elite College Scholarship lottery, I was thrilled. After all, my grandma had just died and I wanted to take care of my aging grandpa -- he couldn't be a farmer in Wyoming forever. And graduating from Eagle Elite meant opportunity.

But I wasn't counting on meeting Nixon.

Nor was I counting on the rules of the Elect.

1. Do not touch The Elect.
2. Do not look at The Elect.
3. Do not speak to The Elect.

And worst of all? Don't discover the secret they hide, because in the end, you may just realize... it's about you.

*This is a New Adult Book, blood, violence, cursing, sexual references, and drug use. Not recommended for those under 17.*

Andy's Review:

Elite, by Rachel Van Dyken
This novel has some serious ups and downs! I suspected that a major secret would be revealed after the first few pages, but I never would have guessed it would lead to what it is. Which I loved. I do admit that I wasn't sure what some scenes meant as the story progressed, but I’m sure if I go back and reread, those uncertainties will be answered now that I know the ending. Need I mention I read this novel in one day! I couldn't put it down, it’s a different pace and I liked it a lot!!

I rate this novel  4 stars because I was confused at times, but I would recommend it to a friend because it’s a great read. And I will be reading the 2nd novel of this story coming out this November.

You can pick up your own copy of Elite via Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

Interview for Books Are Sanity
Where did your inspiration come for the series? Did you intend for it to be a series?

I started thinking about reincarnation when a friend’s son died unexpectedly. I wondered what his 13 years were all about, if this is all there was and started thinking that it would be better if this time was just too short for him, that he’d get another chance to do it again. This lead to the beginnings of my philosophy of the Akhet – that everyone has lived many lives, but only a small group of people remember them.  The people that do remember their past lives use that knowledge and the skills they’ve gained over many lifetimes– hopefully for good things, righting the wrongs that humans have done in the past. But of course, there are going to be rogue Akhet who use their skills and knowledge for evil, and that was where my story really began.
I always knew that there would be more than one book – I just didn’t know how many. Once I got to know the characters of Cole and Griffon (and Drew in INTUITION), it was fairly easy to imagine a big-world scenario that their past lives could influence. I like to think that there are a number of stories in the book – the one about Cole as she discovers who she was in the past and who she should be in the present, the story of her relationship with Griffon and how that develops and changes over time and the bigger, overarching  story of trying to prevent some evil  Akhet from doing real damage to our world.  INTUITION has a satisfying ending – no cliff hangers,  but there is definitely room for more from Cole and Griffon. More books in the series will depend on readership and how many people want their story to continue. Because I do have ideas….

Thank you to author C.M. Omololu for taking the time to write this post!!!

Suddenly You A Moderning Retelling of Mansfield Park (The Jane Austen Academy Series #4) by Cecilia Gray

Blurb from the book:

Fanny doesn't want to be at The Jane Austen Academy. She intends to lay low until graduation when she can try out for the Olympic track team. She doesn't need friends or love. She only needs her running.

But The Academy is in danger. In an effort to save it, Fanny joins forces with the friends she never knew she wanted. Suddenly, Fanny finds herself center stage in the middle of the Academy's biggest love triangle as the lead in the school play...only this track star can't afford to break a leg.

My Review:

Suddenly You is a fantastic addition to The Jane Austen Academy Series!  Cecilia Gray has done it again!  A great story that grabs your attention right away and a writing style that is smooth and flawless!  I enjoyed Fanny's story and watching her learn to trust and open up to her friends.  It was great that the other characters from the previous novels were in the story as well.  Tran was a great lead character; mysterious, constant, and unwavering in his friendship to Fanny.  I loved how Josh was a part of Fanny's story as well!  Reading a Cecilia Gray novel is like sitting in your favorite chair!  It feels just right and you don't want to get out!  I am anxiously looking forward to the next two books in the series!  I am a Cecilia Gray fan for life!

Divine Uprising by Rachel Van Dyken

The fallen were never named, therefore we go by our human names, names given to us by people who use to worship us. I’m Athena, one thing you need to know about me? I hate having to protect the human race, but my job as Seeker asks me to do just that—so that one day, I can earn a spot in heaven.

My father is the leader of the Phantoms, so I’m pretty sure that the archangels think of me as a flight risk, maybe that’s why they gave me the most gorgeous and annoying partner in all of Halceyon, Adonis.

His kisses give me strength, his presence soothes my soul—but our love, is completely forbidden.

There is a war coming, and now that the Titans have been released, it’s been brought to my front door. One thing is for certain—I’m going to have to make a choice, and I’m not sure I have the strength to make the right one, not anymore. Not after meeting Seth, not after my best friend’s betrayal, and not after I meet my father face to face and learn the truth—I may be exactly like him.

My Review:

I was literally swept away into this awesome world that Rachel Van Dyken has created! This book has it all:  Action, romance, good versus evil...what more could you want?  Oh, I looking guys in all their perfection! I loved how tough Athena was and how perfect and good-looking all of the characters were -- and for good reason since they are all angels, fallen or some super race.   Athena was a great lead character: she was  strong, she could hold her own and she wasn't simpering (bonus!)  Adonis, I loved him!  He kept me smiling throughout the book.  Seth takes the cake though. He was part bad boy, wanted to be a good guy and so darn charming!  Man, how could Athena stand being around such hot guys all the time?  I guess it was her lot in life :)

Overall this was a fast and easy read for me.  I was hooked from the start and couldn't put it down until the finish.  Rachel Van Dyken beautifully weaves together the story of the Creation, Greek mythology and fairy-tale creatures into one fantastic book! The ending left me wanting more, a lot more. Yet I know there is another book, so I am trying to be content.  If you like books about angels or Greek mythology then you will LOVE Divine Uprising.  Hurry and grab your own copy, you won't be disappointed!

I received a copy of this book for free.  This is my honest review.

Rating:  Clean in the romance department

Above Rubies by Jaclyn M. Hawkes LDS Blog Tour

above rubies tour

above rubiesAbove Rubies

His chivalry was strangling her. He thought he was helping her—and in truth, he was. She was in desperate straits. But as honorable as he was, he was also breaking her heart. Her attraction was drowning him. When World Champion rodeo cowboy Rossen Rockland and his friends rescue a young runaway who has been abused by her foster father and take her home to his parents’ ranch, he expects her to turn out to be a pain in the neck. And sometimes she is. It doesn’t take him long to figure out that she has way more than her allotment of troubles—and far more than her share of gifts. Lovely, talented, and ravingly brilliant, Kit Star is too young, unbelievably humble, and oh, so loveable. Knowing that she needs his protection and time to grow into her potential, Rossen also figures out that what she really is, is a pain in the heart. Watch for more of the Rockland Ranch Series!

Praise for Above Rubies:

I absolutely could not put this book down. It had me laughing, crying, angry and pretty much every other emotion. I can not wait for the next one in the series to come out. Keep them coming!!! ~Addicted to Books This is the second book in the Rockland Ranch Romance Series. It can be read as a stand alone or copies of Peace River can be supplied if you would also like to review it.

peace riverPeace River (Book 1)

The police didn't understand the danger, but she did. Her father had always been abusive, but now, with a ten million dollar Thoroughbred farm on the line, and a powerful bookie leaning on him, her father had become out of control. But how do you get away and take a world famous stallion with you? Carrie was getting desperate when a handsome and honorable but thoroughly cynical rodeo cowboy from Wyoming happened to show up with a horse trailer. He didn't ride a white horse, but he was definitely a knight in shining armor. He'll protect her from the mob, but can she survive falling in love with a bull rider?

Praise for Peace River

"Give me a clean romance, humor and a good looking cowboy and I'm a happy girl. LDS fiction isn't always my favorite but I really enjoyed the characters and adventure in this book." ~Carol - Goodreads "There was plenty of action, adventure and danger to keep me guessing just how everything was going to turn out. I didn't want to put it down until I finished! Jaclyn Hawkes is one of my favorite LDS romance authors. You really can't go wrong with any of her books that you pick up!" ~Cathy -Goodreads

My Review:

The beginning of the book grabbed my attention right away!  I felt drawn into the story of this mysterious girl and this incredible cowboy who had rescued her.  For the majority of the book, I was completely interested and couldn't seem to put it down, yet there were some points where the book felt slow and and disjointed from the rest of the story.  I liked the fast pace that Kit's life became, yet I felt like she was too perfect at everything.  She then became almost unreal and non relatable.  It seemed unrealistic that someone could be a prodigy at sculpting, guitar, a super intelligent person and on top of that, every guy wants her?  Where was her flaw?  Rossen was a fabulous character yet he was frustrating me so much with his blind sense of chivalry.  At the end, I felt like things were too rushed, I finally got what I was hoping for and then poof!  It's over with one short paragraph for an epilogue?  I felt cheated somehow!  Don't get me wrong, this book was completely intriguing and I want to read the next one, I just felt like there were a few things that could have helped the book be even better!  Kit really needed some type of flaw!  Overall this is a really good read and I look forward to reading about Rossen's brother in the next book in the Rockland Ranch Series!
