The Viscount's Vow by Julie Coulter Bellon, Book Review

Book Summary:

A man changed by war. The woman who loves him. And a secret that could tear them apart.

Edward Rutledge, the newly minted Viscount Carlisle, has come back from war a changed man. The echo of the battlefield and the death of his best friend Marcus haunt him to the point that he decides to break his betrothal to Charlotte---the only woman he’s ever loved.

When he’s summoned home to Hartwell Manor, he comes face-to-face with her. Slowly, her strength and love make him see that he might be able to reclaim what he thought was lost. But when word reaches him that Marcus might not have died in Spain and yet lives, Edward will do anything to bring his friend home. As the mystery deepens, however, Edward is drawn into an intrigue that forces him to confront the demons that have plagued him since he returned to England. Will he have to sacrifice everything he’s built with Charlotte in order to keep her safe?

My Review:

The Viscount's Vow is a regency novel with a powerful message tucked inside. Recently returned from war Edward cannot bear the demons he brought back with him, including the death of his best friend. He cuts off his engagement to his beloved Charlotte to spare her. But at what cost? I had to keep reading to figure out how everything would play out! Bellon did a beautiful job creating Edward and Charlotte's world. Charlotte was such a strong and determined character, I felt her determination fly off of the pages! This regency novel is not just a romance, it bears a message all need to hear! I received a copy of this book for free, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Coming Home to Maverick by Sophia Summers, Book Review

Book Summary:

Bailey is back. Maverick thought he was over her. But neither can deny the feelings that will always be there.

Bailey has made mistakes, so many she doesn't think she'll really ever forgive herself. But her daughter deserves the kind of life Bailey had growing up. When she shows up on her parents' doorstep back to her hometown, the one person she isn't ready to see is Maverick. But will she ever be able to face him?

The minute Maverick hears Bailey is back, he knows his heart still belongs to her. But what kind of man trusts a woman who left him at the altar? As he grapples with a new daughter that he can't help but wish was his, all the responsibilities of running his family's ranch, and the hurt he feels about Bailey's betrayal, he finds new love and hope not only with her but with God.

As soon as God is a part of the equation, the sweetness they find is better than they ever had. Just maybe this second chance around is God's gift of happiness to them both.

My Review:

Be prepared to go on a bucking bronco ride of emotions in Coming Home to Maverick! It gave me all the feels from happiness, sadness, anger, bitterness, forgiveness, and overall love. I wasn't sure what to expect when Bailey came back into town with her daughter in tow. How would the town react and how would Maverick react? Summers takes the reader straight to a small town with a big hearted family. What I loved most about this book is that it made me examine my own self and how I would be when placed in difficult situations. Would I be loving, kind, and forgiving? Or full of hate, anger, and bitterness? The struggle would be difficult and Summers made me want to be a better person no matter what comes my way in life. Coming Home to Maverick is so much more than a story, it is a belief that there is hope, redemption, and forgiveness no matter how far you have gone from home. That God can guide you and forgive you, so you can forgive yourself.  That there is a definition of family that means more than flesh and blood. When a book inspires the reader to be better, that is the mark of greatness. I highly recommend Coming Home to Maverick, it will take you on a journey you will not regret.

With the help of this object and the aid of the enchanting William Pascoe, Alyce finally holds the key to who she once was and who she will become.

My Review:

Well, I totally stayed up until two in the morning to finish this one. This is one of those books that just snuck up on me. It looked and sounded good, but you guys, it is phenomenal! There are so many stories within this story and so many layers to unfold and figure out. The entire mystery kept me reading and page turning until I read the very last word. From the beginning of Alyce's journey until the very end, I was pulled in hook, line, and sinker. Alyce's journey is so unique, I have never read anything like it. Warburton has created a unique historical tale that will take you on an emotional and unpredictable trip beyond your imagination. You will walk away with a new understanding of family and perseverance, terms Alyce truly redefined. For fans of historical romance, this is the book you do not want to miss!

“Hi, Daddy!” Cricket beamed at him, showing off a recent gap in her smile. She’d lost her first baby tooth last week. Grammy had saved it in a little jar and tucked it in with the other mementos of Cricket’s childhood Hud wanted to keep. It seemed like just yesterday she was learning to crawl. He hated how fast she was growing up. In the time it took him to blink, she’d be driving a car, then off to college. Pain clawed at his chest at the thought of his daughter someday leaving him and making her own way in the world. He picked her up and held her close. “Daddy! You’re smuffering me,” Cricket said on a giggle, squirming to be set down. He kissed her cheek, then set her in her chair at the table. Nell placed a glass of milk in front of Cricket and a mug in front of his plate. Steam curled upward, carrying the delicious aroma of rich, black coffee. “Everything is ready,” Nell said, taking a seat across from Hud. “Sit by me,” Cricket said, snagging Emery’s hand and pulling on it. Jossy feigned a pout. “I’ve been displaced as the favored seatmate.” Emery glanced from Jossy to Hud. “I don’t want to steal anyone’s seat.” “You’re fine,” Jossy said, giving Emery a welcoming smile, then settling into the chair on the other side of Hud. “This looks and smells fantastic, Grammy. Thank you for making my muffins.” “Of course, sweetie. It’s a treat to have you join us,” Nell said, lifting Jossy’s and Cricket’s hand in hers. “Let’s hold hands while I offer a word of thanks for this food and beautiful day.” Hud would rather pet a rabid porcupine than hold Emery’s hand in his, but to appease his grandmother, he reached out and clasped it. Unprepared for the wild jolt of electricity that zipped from the point of contact up his arm, he would have dropped her hand and left the room if it wouldn’t have created a flurry of questions from his grandmother and Jossy.

This sweet romance offers a funny, delightful happily ever after adventure in a quirky small town. One-click to read about a meandering goat named Ethel, meddling matchmakers, and a community that feels like home in a story filled with heart, humor, and hope.

My Review:

Hatfield's Catching the Cowboy is fresh and fun! She brings a city slicker primadonna to a small town to meet a rural cowboy and the sparks began to fly and sizzle! Not only is the romance popping, but so are the people of the small town of Summer Creek. They can seem judgmental and hesitant at first, but they turned into Emery's dearest friends and biggest supporters. From the mayor to the waitress at the local diner, Hatfield easily connects the reader to small town America and the sense of community and family you feel there. She accurately portrays what it is like to live and work in a tiny rural town and I loved every second of reading it. I didn't just feel the connection to Summer Creek, but the connection to Emery as she makes a huge metamorphosis while she is there. Hud, Nell, Cricket, and Jossy all felt like family to me and I felt like I was at the ranch alongside them. Hatfield does a superb job of bringing the reader into the Summer Creek family. Because that is what a small town is; a family made up of friends.

Paige Hall’s happy ending may just be in sight. She has been dating her boyfriend for months and feels confident their relationship is going in the right direction—until she catches him kissing another woman. Humiliated and hurt, Paige retreats from the dating scene and pledges to never fall hard again as she throws herself into her work as a speech therapist. Captain Jake Summers is everything a girl could dream of: charming, considerate, and hardworking. Despite Paige’s determination to avoid falling into another relationship, her resolve is no match for the whirlwind romance that ensues. When Jake is not flying, he and Paige are inseparable, and Paige begins to believe in happily ever afters again. But when the couple faces a heartrending loss, they must find strength in each other and in their faith or risk losing a once-in-a-lifetime love.

My Review:

I loved how Paige and Jake met, it was so fun and that scene is emblazoned in my mind! Legendary first time meeting! What I loved most about Flying in Love was the reality of it. Life is not simple and love is not simple. Both take work and effort but when you accomplish that, the results are beautiful. I thought this book would be all about Paige and her journey, but what is beautiful about it is that it's also about Jake's journey. This emotional and gripping story of real-life issues and love captivated my attention and kept me up for a late night until I finished the very last page! Flying in love is contemporary christian fiction at its best!

An Earl for Edith by Tammi Lee Bird, Book Review

Book Summary:

Edith Wilson is twenty-two years old, has never had a London Season, and suspects she never will. Limited finances mean Edith is left ignored while her beautiful younger sisters receive every opportunity. Longing for her mother’s approval, Edith agrees to trap an earl against her better judgment, hoping for a chance at the loving marriage she’s always desired. Yet once she meets the handsome earl, she doesn’t have the heart to ruin his happily ever after.

Miles is extremely wealthy, titled, and single with no intention of ever falling in love again. His first wife taught him how horrible a one-sided marriage could be. When a young woman appears at his hunting lodge set on ensnaring him, he will do anything to keep her away, including lying and betting with a disreputable rogue. But when she walks away from a chance to force him to propose, he regrets his actions. Will he be able to right his wrongs before Edith falls prey to the rake he set on her path?

My Review:

The cover of An Earl for Edith is beautiful and I could not wait to dive into this story! Edith is almost on the shelf and her mother will stop at nothing to try to ensnare an earl for Edith to marry. Edith wants to please her mother so much that she goes along with her crazy scheme even though she doesn't want any part of it. Once she meets him, she doesn't want trap him into marriage, she wants someone to marry her because they love her, not because they are forced to marry her. I have to hand it to Edith, she was determined to do things her own way despite her mother's constant meddling! There were some parts of the story that the dialogue did not naturally flow and it felt off for the conversation. While I enjoyed the story overall, I felt like it needed a little bit of fine tuning so it felt more natural and easy. This is a nice regency read and I am hoping Bird will write George's story next!

Happy Reading!!!

A Change of Fortune by Traci Hunter Abramson, Blog Tour & Giveaway

Book Summary:

Law student Brooke Sherman leads an enviable life, with an impressive education, a prestigious internship, and an ambitious boyfriend who any girl on campus would love to date. But one phone call shatters everything: her father, the optimistic man who insists on buying lottery tickets and dreaming big, has terminal cancer. Desperate to get home and predictably unable to rely on her boyfriend, Brooke finds an unlikely hero in the form of her classmate.

Jason Ramsey has had a crush on his study partner Brooke for months, but he’d never encroach on someone else’s girlfriend—even if the guy doesn’t treat her the way she deserves. But when he learns of Brooke’s father’s diagnosis, Jason steps up to help however he can. In the weeks and months following, Jason is Brooke’s rock, and after Brooke’s breakup, Jason becomes much more than just a friend. But even as they plan for a future together, things get complicated: Brooke’s father had a dying wish, that his daughter buy one last lottery ticket. She never dreamed that fulfilling that wish would jeopardize a future with the man she loves.

My Review:

No matter what genre Abramson writes, it is undoubtably a page turner that I cannot put down! She has an uncanny ability to write a story that is not only interesting, but pulls you in so completely that you have to finish reading it, no matter the time of day or night. Right from the beginning I felt a connection to Brooke and a severe dislike for her haughty and uncaring boyfriend. Man that guy was such an insensitive jerk! But Jason was there, a steady and constant support and doesn't every girl want a man like that? The emotional upheaval of her dad's unexpected cancer was heartrending and the powerful ties between father and daughter hit me right in the heartstrings. If you want to read an emotionally powerful story of friendship, love, family, and good fortune, this is the perfect book for you!
