Larken by S.G. Rogers, Book Review

The sole survivor of a train accident, young Larken Burke is dubbed the Miracle Orphan. Four years later, however, her life is far from fortunate. Because of her emotional and physical scars, she believes she’s un-marriageable. With little hope for the future, she agrees to wed a gentleman she’s never met. Unfortunately, his aloof manner proves difficult to take.

Marked by romantic tragedy and the loss of his brother, Brandon King has forsworn marriage. Obliged to take in a ward, he advertises for a mail-order bride to raise the boy. Since the union is to be a marriage in name only, his criteria are youthful age, a certain level of intellect, good breeding, and that the girl shouldn’t be so ill-favored she would embarrass him in society. To his dismay, he gets more than he’d bargained for.

Will it take a miracle for Mr. and Mrs. King to fall in love, or is their marriage another accident waiting to happen?

My Review:

Larken is the kind of book I love to read! It has a beautiful cover and the story pulled me in and kept me there the entire time! From one page to the next I thought I knew where the story was going, but Rogers threw me several curve balls I didn't see coming! I was rooting for Larken the entire time and felt I came to know her. Myles was such a breath of fresh air, I loved every scene he was a part of! He was an endearing little boy! If you think you have this book figured out, just stop there! This is not your typical historical romance, it is so much better!!! I am still reeling from the final curve ball of the book! If you are on the fence about buying this book, do yourself a favor and click the purchase button, you won't be sorry!!!

#1 New York Times Best Selling Author Rachel Van Dyken joins forces with Regencies hottest names to bring you a Regency Holiday Box Set of "Forbidden Love"

A Winter Wish-By Nadine Millard
Mariah Bolton is as headstrong as she is clever, as strong-willed as she is beautiful. She enjoys her life and, apart from a rather snobbish mama, she is happy with her lot.
Imagine her consternation then when her world is turned upside down by the brooding and aloof Mr. Brandon Haverton!
Mariah and Brandon are forced to endure each other’s company more than either wants to when a snowstorm traps them in the same house.
They argue, they bang heads and they drive each other insane.
But something precious is blooming beneath the surface of all that ice. Something neither looks for but both need.
Can love melt the snow around Brandon’s cold heart?
Can Mariah be brave enough to take a leap of faith?
And can a Winter Wish help bring two souls together forever?

For the Love of a Lady-By Kristin Vayden
Lady Esther Flanguard is all of the above… but that’s all about to change soon.
Because, Essie has a plan. And it’s sure to work brilliantly.
The only thing standing in her way is trying to convince Cross—her best friend’s brother—to go along with it.

Lord Crossby, Cross to those who know him well, knows that Essie’s plan is not a good idea.
What Essie doesn’t know, is that he’s been in love with her for years. He refuses to leave this second chance left to fate. He lost her once, and plans to never lose her again.

So, knowing he’ll risk his heart, he agrees to play along with her disastrous plan. Silently vowing, that though Essie might be pretending…he isn’t, and this time he’s playing for keeps.

Cloaked in Red:A Shattered Fairy Tale-By Kelly Martin
Frederick Dodsworth has no desire to find love at Anthony Wexley's Christmas gathering. Yet when he lays his eyes the beautiful Rebecca for the first time, he is beyond smitten.
Lust turns to love. Love turns to jealousy. Jealousy turns to betrayal.
How did Frederick Dodsworth become the most evil man in Darenset? Simple. It started with a kiss.

The Devil Duke Takes a Bride-By Rachel Van Dyken
Who said being bad wasn't oh so good?
Benedict Devlyn, Duke of Banbury, has one thing on his mind and it isn't marriage. But things take a turn for the worse when his menacing aunt throws a hitch in his plans to remain the most sinful and talked about man in the ton. After all, a man cannot keep the reputation of being The Devil Duke when he is leg-shackled to some simpering spinster.
But his aunt, bless her heart, thinks she's dying, and believes her nephew's behavior is the only thing standing in the way between her entrance to heaven or hell. So she very lovingly and selflessly sets him up. With his childhood nemesis.
A young woman who, though she claims it was an accident, has nearly killed him thrice through her lack of grace and manners. It matters not that the minute he sets eyes on her at the Christmas ball, his blood boils with lust. He refuses to allow himself to fall prey to his aunt's ministrations.
That is, until he is compromised and stuck in an engagement to a girl who claims she'd rather jump from a moving carriage than marry him. Funny thing that, for the very minute she says no, he finds his heart very much wants to say yes. When she doesn't leap at the chance to marry him, he sets about to not only prove that he's worthy of her favor, but also worthy of her heart.

A Courtship for Cecilia (The Love Bird Series #3) by Ruth J. Hartman, Book Review

Cecilia Fletcher yearns for true love with the man of her heart. A life of her own, away from her demanding mother would be an added benefit. But in order to do that, Cecilia must live a lie, making it necessary to use a false name in order to hide a family secret.

Barrington Radcliff has been betrayed by a woman who he thought loved him. Because of that, trust is hard to willingly give. When he meets pretty Cecilia Fleming, his heart wants to give her a chance. Something about her doesn’t ring true, but Barrington allows love to overrule his good judgment.

Can Cecilia and Barrington get past their hurt and secrets long enough to find true love?

My Review:

By far this is my favorite book in the series! Lord Lofton shows how much he has changed and for the better and we get a chance to really know Cecilia and her sweet personality. I loved the mix of old and new characters! Uncle Percy was my favorite and I would love to see him in a future book. He is wise, eccentric and honest; what a great character! Once again Hartman has written a fun and charming book that would appeal to the majority of readers!  If you want romance, fun, and a little bit of crazy all set in England, this is the book to read!

Rough Around the Edges Meets Refined (Meet Your Match #2) by Rachael Anderson, Blog Tour & Giveaway!!!

Rough Around the Edges

Rough Around the Edges
Rough Around the Edges Meets Refined (Meet Your Match #2) by Rachael Anderson For Noah Mackie, life is finally back on track. He has a great support system, a promised promotion is on its way, and he's finally getting the hang of this single father thing. But when the job falls through and his neighbor's matchmaking efforts become more aggressive, Noah is in for yet another unwanted detour. With his career and two spirited daughters to worry about, he doesn't have time for dating—especially not someone like Cassie Ellis, his girls' beautiful and sophisticated dance instructor, who is about as open and approachable as a brick wall. Rough around the Edges Meets Refined is about two people who think they know exactly what they want but who have no idea what they really need. It's about learning that people aren't always what they seem and that sometimes life’s detours take you exactly where you need to go.

My Review:

I really loved the first book in this series and the second was just as good! In book two we get to learn and understand all about Noah, Emma's brother and father of her two adorable nieces!  Anderson does a spot on job of intertwining the two siblings' worlds and moving from Emma's story to Noah's. While Cassie was a wild card, an unknown to me as the reader, getting to know her and understand the depth of her emotions was a wonderful journey.  I loved this story for so many reasons! Because it is about second chances, learning to trust again, trying to figure out who you are and that trying to do all of those things isn't easy. In fact, it is much easier said than done.  The story is so close to how I imagine it would be if these characters actually existed!!!  Anderson is an amazing storyteller who captivates my attention and holds until the very last word!

FREEBIE ALERT!!! The Unveiling by Tamara Leigh!

12th century England: Two men vie for the throne: King Stephen the usurper and young Duke Henry the rightful heir. Amid civil and private wars, alliances are formed, loyalties are betrayed, families are divided, and marriages are made.
For four years, Lady Annyn Bretanne has trained at arms with one end in mind—to avenge her brother’s murder as God has not deemed it worthy to do. Disguised as a squire, she sets off to exact revenge on a man known only by his surname, Wulfrith. But when she holds his fate in her hands, her will wavers and her heart whispers that her enemy may not be an enemy after all.

Baron Wulfrith, renowned trainer of knights, allows no women within his walls for the distraction they breed. What he never expects is that the impetuous young man sent to train under him is a woman who seeks his death—nor that her unveiling will test his faith and distract the warrior from his purpose.

Spotlight: Prudence Pursued by Shirley Raye Redmond

Prudence Pursued

By Shirley Raye Redmond
Astraea Press, July 2014
Available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords, and Kobo

Despite Prudence Pentyre’s best efforts, her cousin Margaret proves
reluctant to accept Sir James Brownell’s marriage proposal, and fears
being “bovinised” if she undergoes the controversial cowpox vaccination he
recommends. And the dashing baronet seems more concerned about the plight
of headhunters in Borneo than Margaret’s refusal. Then Prudence suddenly
finds herself smitten with the man. What can she do?

Here are a few startling facts that will help readers of PRUDENCE PURSUED
and other Regency romance novels appreciate Edward Jenner’s contributions
to the era so popular with fiction readers:

(1)    In its day, smallpox was referred to as “the speckled monster. (2)    It
killed hundreds of millions of people—more than the Black Death and the
wars of the 20th century put together!
(3)    President Thomas Jefferson, who used the Jennerian method to vaccinate
his own family, friends, and slaves, once wrote to Jenner: “Yours is the
comfortable reflection that mankind can never forget that you have lived.”
(4)    A woman who was considered a “great beauty” during this time period
was usually one who had not been seriously disfigured by smallpox. It was
understood by portrait artists of the day that they were not to paint in
the disfigurements and pockmarks of their subjects.
(5)    Jane Austen’s dearest friend Martha Lloyd was scarred by smallpox for
the remainder of her life. Several members of the Lloyd household died
from the disease. A character in Austen’s novel Northanger Abbey is
disfigured and crippled by the dreaded disease.

And what do pretty milkmaids have to do with Jenner’s discovery of the
possible prevention of smallpox? Read PRUDENCE PURSUED and find out! And
enjoy a lively love story along the way.

A Timeless Romance Anthology: Silver Bells Collection

Six Award-Winning Authors have contributed new stories to A Timeless Romance Anthology: Silver Bells. Readers will love this collection of six historical novellas, all centered around the Christmas season with one thing in common: Romance.

In NY Times & USA Today’s bestselling author Lucinda Brant’s delightful novella, FAIRY CHRISTMAS, Kitty Aldershot is orphaned and forced to live on others’ charity. Offered a home under the generous roof of her relatives, the Earl of Salt Hendon and his countess, Kitty wants for nothing, not even the affections of Mr. Tom Allenby. But when Kitty stumbles across a letter written by Lady Caroline that reveals how Mr. Allenby would be ruined should he marry the likes of Kitty, she realizes she has been fooling herself all along. Kitty’s world crumbles around her as she recognizes she will forever be alone with no prospects at all.

Sarah M. Eden’s charming romance novella A CHRISTMAS PROMISE, Sean Kirkpatrick is trying to get to his new place of employment, Kilkenny Castle, in order to start as the new stablehand. His only requirement is to drive a team of high-spirited nags from Dublin to Kilkenny in a certain amount of time. Unfortunately he winds up in a muddy field, stuck, lost, and running out of time. He’s about to lose the job before he can prove himself capable of finishing his first assignment. When Maeve Butler arrives on the scene, Sean isn’t sure if she’s intent on rescuing him or bent on torturing him with her fiery wit and lovely dark eyes.

In Heather B. Moore’s enchanting novella, TWELVE MONTHS, Lucien Baxter’s best and most incorrigible friend, Will, dies unexpectedly, leaving behind his new bride and unborn child the week before Christmas. Will’s last request is that Lucien watches over Cora, not just as a benefactor, but as a husband. When Lucien does his duty and proposes to Cora, he’s turned down flat. But over the course of the next few days, Lucien discovers that marrying Cora wouldn’t be any sort of duty after all, but a matter of following his heart.

In Lu Ann Staheli’s sweet romance novella, A FEZZIWIG CHRISTMAS, Dick Wilkins and his best friend Ebenezer Scrooge have been looking forward to the annual Fezziwig Christmas dance for weeks. Ebenezer is practically engaged to Annabelle Fezziwig, and Dick hopes to start courting her younger sister, Pricilla. Once the dance starts, and Pricilla arrives, as pretty and charming as ever, Dick discovers that he’s not the only man vying for her attention. His best friend advises Dick that he has to win Pricilla’s heart, as well as her mother’s favor. Losing his heart has suddenly become very complicated.

A TASTE OF HOME, a captivating romance by Annette Lyon, we meet Claire Jennings, who’s on her way to spend Christmas with her family. As she rides the train with William Rhodes, who grew up across the street, memories of Christmases past flood her mind. He may be twenty-one now, but she can’t forget his torturous teasing from their school years. At the rail station, Claire discovers that her home is under quarantine because her little brother has measles. She's stuck in town, away from her family, on her favorite holiday. William stays behind with her, and as Christmas Day approaches and her homesickness deepens, she discovers that perhaps he has changed in more ways than one.

Becca Wilhite’s entrancing novella, MY MODERN GIRL, follows Margie, who lands her dream job as a clerk at Macy’s department store in New York City. Margie might be new in town, but she’s determined to succeed and prove to Henry that moving to the city was the right decision. As the Christmas season approaches, Margie realizes that being a “modern girl” might not be all she had dreamed of and Henry might have more to offer than she ever imagined.

My Review:

I am always a fan of these great anthologies! Silver Bells includes six great short stories all about Christmas. When you don't have much time to read, one of these stories is just the right fit! I felt the cold, saw the lights and was wishing for snow in my own little town! Reading Silver Bells is a great way to get into the Christmas Spirit!

The Christmas Bargain by Shanna Hatfield, Book Review

Luke Granger is about to get more than he bargained for…

As owner and manager of the Hardman bank, Luke Granger is a man of responsibility and integrity in the small 1890s Eastern Oregon town. Calling in a long overdue loan, Luke finds himself reluctantly accepting a bargain in lieu of payment from the shiftless farmer who barters his daughter to settle his debt.

Philamena Booth is both mortified and relieved when her father sends her off with the banker as payment of his debt. Held captive on the farm by her father since the death of her mother more than a decade earlier, Philamena is grateful to leave. If only it had been someone other than the handsome and charismatic Luke Granger riding in to rescue her. Ready to uphold her end of the bargain as Luke’s cook and housekeeper, Philamena is prepared for the hard work ahead. What she isn’t prepared for is being forced to marry Luke as part of this crazy Christmas bargain.

My Review:

I truly enjoyed reading The Christmas Bargain! Hatfield writes characters that have depth and emotion that as a reader I could definitely connect with. The poor way that Philomena was treated by her father and the ensuing Christmas bargain that was made with Luke will have you captivated from page one until the very end! This is a great story of friendship, trust, faith and love in a lovely snowy country setting!  While a clean romance, you could still feel the heat of the romance between Luke and Filly!  Hatfield allows the reader to really get to know each character thoroughly, from Luke's sweet tooth to Filly's passion for horses, I felt like they became my friends! I am a new reader to Hatfield and look forward to reading many more books by her!

Messenger (The Giver Quartet #3) by Lois Lowry, Book Review

Trouble is brewing in Village. Once a utopian community that welcomed strangers, Village will soon be cut off to all outsiders. As one of the few able to traverse the forbidding Forest, Matty must deliver the message of Village’s closing and try to convince Seer’s daughter Kira to return with him before it’s too late. But Forest is now hostile to Matty, too, and he must risk everything to fight his way through it. Messenger is the masterful third novel in Lois Lowry’s Giver Quartet, which includes The Giver, Gathering Blue, and Son—all newly designed!

My Review:

So books one and two finally come together in book three!  I was really bothered that book two didn't provide the answers I sought from book one, but The Messenger answers some of them!  I am hopeful that book four answers the rest.  I have to say that I really loved Matty's character.  He was so sweet, kind, loving and truly one of a kind.  I enjoyed learning more about Kira and The Seer, as well as Leader.  If you haven't tried The Giver series yet, I definitely recommend it!

The Match Maker by Karey White, Blog Tour & Review

Match Maker

Blog Tour hosted by I Am A Reader November 4th to 21st Tour Schedule

  Match Maker Book Cover

The Match Maker by Karey White (The Husband Maker #2)

(Summary contains spoilers if you have not yet read book #1 The Husband Maker) It’s been six months since Charlotte and Kyle broke up, and the Husband Maker strikes again. Kyle is officially engaged, while Charlotte is still nursing a broken heart. In an effort to get Charlotte out of her rut, she and her best friend decide it’s time for some good old-fashioned matchmaking. While Aleena arranges for Charlotte to meet up with a handsome Scottish tourist, Charlotte gets her two best friends together. But when sparks start to fly between Aleena and Angus, Charlotte is left feeling more alone that ever--at least until the charming Scotsman becomes more than just a safe, rebound guy and teaches her that maybe, just maybe, she can dare to open her heart again.

My Review:

Book two in the Husband Maker Series had me turning pages as quickly as I could!  Charlotte is kind, sweet and a great friend.
However she was unwittingly frustrating to me at times! She just doesn't look beyond her own view of her love life. I loved Flynn, the Scotsman from the Isle of Lewis! His accent, his kindness, his patience....everyone wants a man like Flynn!

While I understood why Charlotte didn't want to hurt her friend, instead of examining her feelings she ran away! The end, oh my word, the end of this book will kill me! I seriously have to wait until next year for a resolution? Save me because I am still thinking about the final scene and trying to piece together what will happen in book three. No spoilers here but please someone read this book and talk to me because I am dying over here! Until book three! White has captivated me with an emotional and fun contemporary romance series!

The Christmas Cowboy by Shanna Hatfield, Book Review

Flying from city to city in her job as a busy corporate trainer for a successful direct sales company, Kenzie Beckett doesn’t have time for a man. And most certainly not for the handsome cowboy she keeps running into at the airport. Burned twice, she doesn’t trust anyone wearing boots and Wranglers, especially someone as charming and handsome as Tate Morgan.

Among the top saddle bronc riders in the rodeo circuit, easy-going Tate Morgan can handle the toughest horse out there, but trying to handle the beautiful Kenzie Beckett is a completely different story.

As the holiday season approaches, this Christmas Cowboy is going to need more than a little mistletoe to win her heart.

My Review:

Caution:  You may fall in love with a fictional cowboy named Tate! I loved this story so much! The chance meetings at the airport and the flirting back and forth! Family, rodeos, Christmas, trust issues, yeah this book covers it all! The entire book consumed my thoughts until I was finished reading it, and now that I am done, I am still thinking about it!

From contemporary to historical Hatfield can write any genre she wants and I will read it! The romance level is clean but the chemistry and kisses are smoking hot! With characters that are endearing and you feel a real emotional connection with, Hatfield has a way of writing a story that anyone want would want to read! Grab your favorite blanket, find a cozy chair and a cup of hot cocoa because this Christmas story is one you won't put down until you finish the last word! I'm going to start saving my pennies because I want to buy every book that have Hatfield has written!

Dancing with Raven by Suzanne Rogers, Book Review

Tori has spent the past seventeen years trying to ignore her ability to see unnatural creatures. As she prepares to transition from high school to the world of professional ballet, however, seismic activity in Los Angeles is increasing and the number of demons is multiplying at an alarming rate. After a new student from London transfers to her performing arts school, she soon discovers her life has been a lie and someone wants her dead.

Raven’s father, a renowned British demon hunter, has tasked him with guarding the one person who can inadvertently bring about the end of the world. Unfortunately, Raven’s record of success has fallen short lately and his confidence is shaken. Worse, Tori seems determined to freeze him out. Can he win her trust quickly enough to prevent the Apocalypse?

My Review:

I have read quite a few of Rogers' books and this one blew me away! There are so many twists and turns; every time I thought I knew what would happen, that theory would be blown away. Then there was the matter of who to trust?  I couldn't ever really decide who was trust-worthy!  I thought I did, but man Roger's kept me on my toes!  Why is this book so great?  The story is unique and compelling and the storytelling was so well done that I was flipping pages like a madwoman! The secrets, the heartache, the unknown, this book just kept me on my toes!  And seriously, where is book two?  I need it like yesterday!

About Shanna Hatfield

Shanna Hatfield 2

A hopeless romantic with a bit of sarcasm thrown in for good measure, Shanna Hatfield is a best-selling author of sweet romantic fiction written with a healthy dose of humor. In addition to blogging and eating too much chocolate, she is completely smitten with her husband, lovingly known as Captain Cavedweller. Shanna creates character-driven romances with realistic heroes and heroines. Her historical westerns have been described as “reminiscent of the era captured by Bonanza and The Virginian” while her contemporary works have been called “laugh-out-loud funny, and a little heart-pumping sexy without being explicit in any way.” She is a member of Western Writers of America, Women Writing the West, and Romance Writers of America.

An Interview with Two Heroes

Have you ever wondered what two men from two different centuries would discuss? Today, Shanna Hatfield brings together two of her popular heroes for an interesting interview. Luke Granger is a banker, rancher, and involved community member in The Christmas Bargain, a sweet Victorian romance taking place in 1893 in Hardman, Oregon. Tate Morgan is from the contemporary sweet romance The Christmas Cowboy. He’s a retired saddle bronc rider who calls his ranch near Kennewick, Washington home.

Welcome to you both. Tell us a little about your home.

Luke: I live in the small but bustling community of Hardman, Oregon in Eastern Oregon. We have several churches, a school, a newspaper office, skating rink and mercantile there. My wife, Filly, and I live in the house where I grew up on the edge of town. We raise cattle and a few horses.

Tate: Kenzie, my wife, and I live on the ranch that my grandfather started back in the early 1900s. We’re about thirty miles from Kennewick, Washington. We primarily raise beef cattle, wheat, and hay.

What is your single most favorite modern convenience?

Luke: Indoor plumbing. Filly frequently reminds me we are very fortunate to have indoor plumbing at our house. When the weather outside is cold and nasty, it sure comes in handy.

Tate: I have to say I appreciate indoor plumbing too, but since that is something common that we all take for granted, I’d say my phone is my favorite convenience. (At Luke’s confused look, Tate grins and hands over his cell phone, giving him a brief explanation of how it works.)

Luke: I can’t believe you can instantly speak to someone whenever you wish or look up any piece of information. This is like holding the world in your hand.

  Tate: Yeah, it is.

What’s your favorite thing about your home?

Luke: (Smiles) Without a doubt, my wife is what makes it home. Filly is the best thing that ever happened to me.

Tate: (Nods in agreement) Kenzie turned a quiet ol’ ranch house back into a home. She’s the best and first thing that comes to mind when I think about home.

Here are three fun questions… Coffee or tea?

Tate: Most of the time coffee, except during the holiday season. Kenzie makes the best Christmas tea.

Luke: (Glances at Luke with a curious expression) Filly makes Christmas tea, too. Is the tea your wife makes dark and spicy with just a hint of sweetness?

Tate: Sure is! Maybe it’s an old recipe. Cats or dogs? Luke: Dogs. Tate: Definitely dogs. Sweet or savory?

  Luke and Tate: Sweet!

Tate: Christmas treats are one of the best things about the holidays.

Luke: I heartily agree.

Tell us one thing you admire about your wife.

Luke: It’s hard to choose just one. Filly is such a strong person. Her father imprisoned and abused her for more than a decade before I married her. She not only survived but also thrived. She’s witty, charming, lovely, and loving. (Takes a photograph from his pocket and shows it to Tate)

Tate: (Grins at Luke). She’s beautiful. She reminds me of Kenzie with that twinkle in her eye and her height. Isn’t that unusual for your era?

Luke: Yes, it is. She’s an unusually wonderful woman, though. Is Kenzie tall?

Tate: Yep. (Pulls up a photo of Kenzie on his phone and hands it to Luke)

Luke: She’s enchanting. Is that your son she’s holding?

Tate: (Nods) The thing I admire most about Kenzie is her drive. Once she decides on something, there is no stopping her. She’s funny and ten-times smarter than I ever hope to be, not to mention gorgeous and sweet. I don’t know what I did to deserve her, but I’m grateful every day for her love… (Smirks) and her cooking.

  Luke: (Chuckles)

Thank you both for joining us. Any parting words for our readers?

Tate: If you enjoy historical fiction, sweet romances, or good westerns, I hope you’ll consider reading our stories in the Hardman Holidays and Rodeo Romance series.

Luke: Be sure to check out The Christmas Calamity, releasing Nov. 13. My assistant Arlan really gets into the magic of the season with the arrival of a prestidigitator in town.

Tate: I’ve never met a prestidigitator, although I’ve been around some great rodeo clowns. (The two men get to their feet.)

Luke: If you aren’t in a hurry, do you mind if I look up a few things on that? (Gestures to Tate’s cell phone)

Tate: (Hands Luke the phone) Go right ahead. By the way, I’d sure like to know how…
